iPad Merge VM Pro on iPad

Did someone tried this out on iPad Pro?

It sounds very promising but it is quite expensive 99 USD/EUR and has no trial so I would not like to throw money out on the window.

I wouldn't touch that with an 11-inch pole. Website looks sketchy, app looks sketchy, 3 reviews are botted (2 from the same person), and nearly every single other review is one star. Not to mention, if this was really a VM, it would likely be kicked from the App Store before it even got on the shelf... do not buy.

This is not true. It actually works fine. So far I couldn't make it outperform tethered UTM (which it is based upon), but it has some benefits like preset virtual machines. Support is almost nonexistent though.

Often in the release notes you'll see things like "decoupled from UTM code", all that means is that they spotted references to UTM in the UI strings or BIOS they missed during their previous modifications and replaced them with "Merge". This app still runs UTM code.

They also release updates with notes that claim "20x faster VMs" but they're all bogus. None of these updates have actually made performance any better. As a matter of fact, updates frequently break VMs and prevent them from booting or mess up features like the cursor (the latest update breaks the ability to left-click in my Windows XP VM, for example). A recent update also makes it so that if you import any existing VM file, the app will crash instantly every time you try to launch it and basically become unusable until you delete and reinstall.

Many features advertised in the App Store page are bogus as they rely on the jailbreak version of UTM. For example, they advertised being able to connect USB drives to VMs but this is not possible at all.

Oh, and they recently upped the price from $99 to $199.

A quick check shows that this account has only ever left reviews on apps from that one same developer and all of them are misleading 5-star reviews so it's safe to say they're using an alt. The same person also sells a bunch of other things, amongst which are DVDs of trains and aircraft they supposedly recorded. A quick check shows that these are all stock footage from other places they obtained and are reselling.

In short - avoid.

It looks like it is based on the SE version ( slow edition) and cannot be run with jitterbug due to enterprise certificate (rather than developer). You are right this 100% decoupled from UTM is a lie. Most importantly the support is 0. As I said the only benefit I see in this app is the prebuilt machines. For 100$ ( now you say it is even 200) it is not worth it. It really is a rebranded UTM-SE with an enterprise certificate.

Just a quick heads-up, the latest update completely breaks VM importing and transfers.

When he originally rebranded UTM to his Merge VM package, he altered the code so that it uses .mvm as the file extension for VM files but this is basically the same file just with a different extension (you could import/export/transfer VMs between UTM and Merge just by changing the file extension). In the latest update, he did a sloppy job with the find/replace and missed a few places in the code referencing file extensions so now Merge VM doesn't fully work with either .utm or .mvm files. Existing VMs will work but if you change any settings it can corrupt. If you attempt to import a .mvm file of an existing VM (including pre-built ones from his own repository), it will crash Merge VM and if you copy any .mvm files into Merge's Documents folder, the app will instantly crash upon launch repeatedly until the file is removed.

New VMs created in Merge now have the .utm file extension instead of .mvm but if you try to import a .utm VM it will not recognise it because the import dialog is set to only accept .mvm files.

Existing VMs will work but if you change any settings it can corrupt.

Actually with the update 23.7.5 it cannot even open its own machine. It crashes on start.

Only windows XP and windows 7 are with acceptable performance. You ca try UTM-SE which it is based on. Also for the same price you can buy developer account and install UTM and run it with jitterbug for much faster performance.

Windows 10 and 11 are completely unusable on Merge VM.

It seems that UTM SE launched in the appstore.
I only have a 2020 iPad Pro so performance will probably be underwhelming.
Did someone with a M Series iPad tried it out?

It doesn't have JIT, so performance will be slow. Older versions of Windows like Win95, 98, and XP run okay but newer versions are unusable. I got Mac OS 9 and OS X 10.0 working but newer versions were either too slow or didn't boot at all.

You can enable JIT with developers account, but only up to Windows 7 is usable.
