I have been using MKVtools for extracting PGS .sup subtitles from mkv files which I then convert to .sub using BDSuptoSub which Handbrake can use for forced subtitles. I really like MKVTools for extracting. The problem is MKVTools doesn't seem to be able to merge a .sub back into the mkv and I have to use yet another program to accomplish this. Is it supposed to be able to do this? And can it add them to an m4v file as well?

In BDSup2Sub you should be exporting them using the SUB/IDX format which will give you a file with an .idx extension that MKVMerge will accept.

Take a look at steps 3 and 4 of the following tutorial.

I've done this many time with no problems.

I know you can do it with MKVMerge because I have already done it. What I am trying to do is eliminate one of the tools in the process and not require Windows. I need something to extract the files and I also need something to merge the files after I finish converting them.

I can extract with MKVTools but can I also merge with it? That's what I'm not sure about.

I can merge with MKVMerge but can I also extract with it? Apparently not without using the Windows version.

If I am wrong somewhere please correct me or if there is some other tool that can do both tasks on a Mac please do let me know. My current method requires 6 different tools in the following order when I need to process forced subtitles:

    1. MakeMKV (ripper and MKV file creator)
    2. MKVTools (extraction of subtitles)
    3. BDSuptoSub (change PGS .sup subtitles to Handbrake compatible VoBSub .sub)
4.MKVToolnix/MKVMerge (mux the .sub back into the MKV)
    5. Handbrake (transcode into an Apple TV2 compatible .m4v)
    6. iFlicks (add metatags and place in iTunes)

It would be nice to eliminate one of them. It will be much easier once Handbrake is able to support PGS.
