You mean other than HTML5 which is an Apple/Google creation? Apple supports Apple proprietary web technology. But then it is an Apple product and as long as Microsoft is around, Apple can't be sued for monopolistic practices. But Apple is getting bigger.

This statement has so many words you clearly do not understand the meaning of.

HTML5 is an open standard. Hardly a "Apple proprietary technology".

Flash is an example of a proprietary technology.

Apple has less than 5%? of the computer market so hardly a Monopoly.

Their approach in how they restrict software like flash that wants to access and control CPU and memory APi's? Not monopolistic. These decisions help to keep the introduction of malware and virus plagued software out of my OS. I hope they never stop.

What? No Silverlight on the iPad? NO Buy!

Every other pundit is bummed for the lack of flash, but aren't we missing out on MS's glorious technology designed as per usual to make open standards closed and becoming another cash cow?:p

What? No AppleSoft Basic? No Buy.

How will I run all those Apple II+ Basic programs in all the computer magazines in my parents basement?

What, no punched card reader? How will I run all those card decks in my grandparents attic?

And where do I pour the whale oil & coal for more backlighting and power when the battery runs down?

Say what you want, but SilverLight on the Mac is implemented heck of a lot better than Flash. I am yet to experience a single browser crash while running SilverLight videos, and it consumes about 20% less CPU on my Air, as compared to Flash.

SilverLight on iPad would also make NetFlix streaming possible, which would be a very cool thing.

Netflix uses Silverlight, so I think it would be good to have it unless Netflix finally makes a player for the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad.

It runs GREAT on a Mac. Jobs can't use the poor performance excuse again.

It'd be fun to stream my netflix movies on my iphone.

You know a classic Apple emulator would be cool

The iPad is really a single purpose device. An Apple vending machine. You are supposed to buy the device and then buy everything you do, view and listen to from Apple. You want to watch videos? No Hulu for you - only App Store (and dollars to Apple). Want to watch streaming stock market quotes, to see your Apple stock rise? Buy the app for it. It's Apple's device and Steve Jobs can do what ever he wants with it. But it's a high tech vending machine.

Youtube and the stocks apps are free, as is the calendar, mail, notes, iphoto etc. etc. , plus the tens of thousands of free productivity, utilities, games, video, etc. etc. apps....

And a productivity app such as word processor will cost you $9.99. Just a tad cheaper than word in office on a netbook....

What exactly would the "classic Apple emulator" emulate?

Classic Apple,

Black and wbite calculators
Gray scale paint
Old School Text Editor

Things like that ...

:)

Actually. I want to be able to go into a monitor and create sprites and do things in Apple Basic... Like the 80's when an Apple IIc was tops...

although I agree that SV is better than flash nothing runs smoother than my html5 beta on youtube.

I use SV for sky online and I find the quality less than outstanding, certainly not on par with iplayer.

What do you think cloud computing is all about? This is just the start of it. If you don't like how apple is doing this, then go buy the winbloze version. Not going to see much difference.

Smooth streaming is awesome.

I setup the following video:

On a VM on one of our webservers as a demo to customers. Running on a heavily utilized server in a VM with minimal resources off of IIS7.5 it delivers a way better experience than Fl...pause...as....pause...h.....

Check out the demo, I do hope Silverlight is released for it.

Oh, you misunderstand. I'm an avid Apple supporter. I bought iPhones for myself and everyone in my family. I've upgraded through the different versions. I have Macbook Pro and have bought Macbook Pros for each member of my family. Apple is far superior to Microsoft in every aspect. But I still have a big problem with the iPad and no Flash. I'm extremely disappointed. To the point of not buying one. And I really wanted one until the no Flash came out. I hope that Apple does very well with the iPad. I want their stock to increase further in value. But too many people here think that all Flash does is play videos. I spent the weekend re-designing a Flash site to be non-Flash. I trashed Microsoft's Expressions web editor and re-did it in Rapidweaver. My problem was that for file upload add-ons, they're Flash based. And this is an exclusive Mac program. I'm not a big Flash fan. It is intrusive, a CPU hog and a good source for virus and trojan introduction. Flash's demise would be welcomed. I applaud Steve Jobs for his vision. But the fact remains that Flash is incorporated in up to 85% of websites, according to some estimates. Even if it's only 50%, that's a lot of the Internet. It's not the videos, it's the little navigational things that most people don't see unless they actually try to use it. I wanted an iPad for web browsing. It's not a good device for that due to the lack of Flash. Maybe in 5 years, but not today. If someone wants the iPad for other purposes and web browsing is of minor importance, then great - buy one.

HTML5 will be open source and Flash is indeed proprietary. But right now, it's a Google/Apple development and not a available to developers outside the Apple/Google fiefdom.

Apple does indeed look at the iPad as another cash cow for apps, etc. Just like the iPod. Yes there are free apps. Yes you can download MP3s and put it on an iPod or presumably an iPad. But there's a reason why the App Store is a moneymaker for Apple and why they want to increase this revenue. The iPad is indeed a vending machine for Apple. The astute computer user will be able to use the iPad with minimal expense. But how many people does anyone on this forum know that is not that good with computers, and yet they have them. It's the ones who are not on places like this forum who will buy all their content from Apple. And that's what Apple wants. It's not a bad thing.

I find it almost obnoxious that when people bring up legitimate reasons they aren't in love with the iPad and features that would either help them tip the scale or that they would like to see are so "easily" dismissed by those that love the iPad.

The people who are explaining why they are disappointed or what features they feel are lacking are just written off as "well you don't need that" "there's no reason to support that" "That's not what the iPad is for"

It's pretty much all crap. And just because you don't care about (for example) flash, multitasking, silverlight, fill-in-the-blank - that doesn't mean everyone does or that you can just dismiss it like they aren't important with these so-called "justifications"

You don't NEED a radio/cd player in a car and not having one won't make a care not successful or not sell. But there's no denying that having one can add to ones enjoyment of driving around. And whether or not YOU would use one in the car doesn't mean the car shouldn't have one.

I don't use a lot of features and/or settings for my iPhone and iMac. That doesn't mean I would argue they weren't necc. Or that the devices shouldn't have them. Even if they could potentially cause battery drains, poor performance, etc.

But back to my point - it's obnoxious to just dismiss criticism with the "you don't need it" attitude. No one know what another person NEEDS. And at the end of the day - no one NEEDS an iPad anyway. So maybe from now on when someone tells another that they don't need silverlight - or flash, or multitasking, we can just respond "you don't need an iPad either"

iPad, macs and silverlight

I keep reading how people say Silverlight does not run on iO systems. I have an iPad 2 and a Mac mini and I watch Netflix on both. I even download updates to silverlight on my Mac mini. I'm questioning this because I haven't figured out how to get updates for silverlight for my iPad, specifically. But, when I update the Netflix app, I suppose it updates silverlight then?

Why all the confusion ab
No different opinions about this?

Silverlight works on iPad!!

I keep seeing this in LOTS of Mac blog/support site: tha Silverlight won't run on iPad or iO systems. Not true! I have an ipad2 and a Mac mini and stream Netflix everyday!!

I even download new versions of silverlight on my Mac mini. Haven't figured out how to do that on iPad, cause I keep hearing these stupid rumors that ipad doesn't support Silverlight platform.. But that's exactlynwhat Netflix uses!

Anyway, on. My iPad I just update the Netflix app and maybe that automatically updates a new version of silverlight.

Why is there so much misinformation out there on this topic?
