I am not even getting a case, just the dock. I can't stand them, the naked feel is so much better. However from what I have seen and heard, you definitely do not want to be dropping one of these things. :(

I still use my 2G iPhone and it has never had a case on it. Hardly can see a scratch anywhere on it including the chrome pieces. It is either in my pocket with nothing else, in my hand when in use, or in it's dock. The iPad on the other hand I will buy a case. I can see myself setting it down on a hard surface when typing (desk at school or kitchen counter top). The aluminum would get scratched up pretty easily.

I haven't seen a case that I like yet. I'll probably go naked for the next few weeks and see what gets released. I have a Seidio Innocase II for my iPhone and love it, so I'm hoping they come out with an iPad version.

I'll probably get a sleeve for transport. I like the sound of getting a netbook sleeve....

I love the look and feel of this, but I know that scratches will bother me. I used a leather flip case for my first iPhone and took my iPhone out a lot of the time to use it. I did enjoy that. Then, after using a sleeve with my iPhone 3G, I liked just using a rubberized plastic case and not worrying. The flip case worked nicely with the aluminum iPhone, then using my iPhone naked mattered less with the glossy plastic back.

I'd like to go naked, but the convenience of not worrying about permanently scratching the most vulnerable part of the iPad (the back) is a decent trade off. I'm open to replacing my Apple iPad case with a sleeve most of the time, but it also seems like the aluminum could get slippery and easy to drop. This is a particularly fantastic device without anything covering it.

That's what I don't really get though...yes scratches lookmbad, but doesn't a bulky case look way worse? I mean I'd rather see a scratched back vs not seeing the back at all because it's in a case. And really...are you saving it for resale or why are the few scratches so bad?

I think the best solution is one of those invisible shields...still get the nice aesthetics but with scratch resistance.

To answer your question, actually I would like to sell this right before the next model is released. Honestly, an iPad labelled "like new" will go for a nice amount more than an iPad that's all scratched up. An iPad doesn't seem like unlikely case to drop without a bulky case so I don't know. I do plan to take my iPad in and out of Apple's case for at least half of my usage, so I don't think I'll go with a case made to be left on for months. I haven't tried actually using my iPad in the Apple case yet so I'm not sure how easy it will be to put itmin and out constantly.

The case prices on the iPad are Fu///ng ridiculous. The apple case is definitely overpriced but I have yet to see one that beats the functionality. That may change over time if it ends up letting scratches in but so far it is the apple case vs a skin from bestskinsever (cuz I won't pay double or more for the same product from ghost armor or zagg) is to me the only choice.

To jump into the thread here, let me say I plan on doing the same thing and resell it before the 2nd gen. I myself am planning on going naked for the next for weeks, though am hoping not that long...eyeing what cases and screen protectors come out.

Admittedly the feel of the iPad alone is fantastic, but I do not want to risk dropping it, cause i know it will fall at least once and do not want it to break.

Also, I need to be carrying this around and am placing that fact into my choice of case; whichever it may be.

A folio, such as Apple's case, sounds well-suited for you as well. You get the protection of a good sleeve when you throw it into a bag, you can easily keep it in the folio for extra protection if you're going to stand up using the iPad, for example. Then, whenever you feel comfortable that you won't drop it, just take it out and throw the folio aside. Plus, you can stand it up to watch videos or use a real keyboard. Not a bad way to start for $40 to protect your $500+ investment.

I like the look and feel of the iPad without the case but since I bring it around with me everyday in my backpack and what not I want to have it in a case to avoid unnecessary wear and tear on the device. I just picked up the Apple designed case today and am very impressed with its versatility. Definetly worth keeping and it adds little bulk in my opinion.

one of the reviews had a line like... this much unprotected glass makes going outside without a case a bit like taunting gravity, poking it in the eye.

I agreed and just felt too nervous to carry it around unprotected. I got the Apple case and love it. It is very light, thin and the built-in stand thing is a god send. It makes using it on my lap easier, putting it at just the right angle to type on.

So I say, put some Apple clothes on that nekkid iPad.

Agree! All the brand name ones are very pricy. There are many cheap no-name rubber/silicon iPad cases on Ebay, however.

Yeah, I'm on the fence with the Apple brand case

Nevertheless i'm limited to what Best Buy sells as i'm an employee and get ridiculous discounts. I checked with my discount a Belkin iPad leather case thats $60 and can get it for $15, only thing is I really didn't like that one. Plus since the iPad just came out the accessories are still slowly rolling out. I may get a 10inch InCase sleeve for it (as well).

For those of you who are using your iPad naked...

How are you protecting the shinny apple logo on the back of the device???

Any tips??? I just really don't want to scratch mine :(

I keep it mostly in the original iPad box so the back of it is not exposed that much and sure as heck am not taking my iPad outside the house until I got a protective case. As for the logo, protecting it is not really a concern.

Mine comes on thursday, so I don't know until then. However I bought the dock not the case, so It doesn't scratch by placing it on a desk. I plan to charge it on the dock, use it as a photo frame and use in on the couch, bed, etc.
