what exactly is getting improved by moving to this chipset?

It isnt a huge improvement as the next ship after merom will be.

I think the newbies these days are oblivious to the search function these days ...

MacRumors can also be googled, so just use that "advanced search" link to search the MR domain.

Search is good. However, I don't think searching for "meron" will find you much.
