I’d argue that is something of a different kettle of fish. Compared to a lamp where at most you might switch it on or off, maybe adjust a dimmer switch, with a TV set you’d expect to make multiple changes and or adjustments e.g. volume, channel, additional device for alternate media while sitting in a position of comfort

With any automation, there will be those that resist it.

Back in the 70's and 80's, there were plenty of people that thought remote controls for the TV were for the lazy ones seeing as there were primarily only 13 watchable channels and you had to get up to change the volume anyways.

Go figure.

I’m surprised to see so many negative comments about Meross gear with HomeKit. I’ve got 5 of their smart plugs, a garage door opener, a pair of bulbs, and a light strip. Only issue I have is HomeKit has a problem switching between colours, and white light on the light strip. I have to use the Meross app for that, but it’s no big deal as I have no real need to ever change the colour. Otherwise, they’re all working flawlessly.

Ha! This conversation prompted me to open the Meross app, and check for firmware updates. Sure enough, they’ve now fixed my colour switching problem. Honestly, I’d be happy to recommend their stuff if it weren’t for all the complaints in this thread 🤷‍♂️

out of all of the homekit devices I have tried Meross devices were the crappiest. I returned all of them because they are always unreachable after the first few minutes of setting them up. Instead of the devices getting smarter I felt dumber for buying them.

And seeing your comment just made me check, too. Updated the firmware -- we'll see if that helps at all!

Why on earth is a smart lamp a thing? I really, really, don’t understand this

I have thought the same question. *why*

One reason: I have an 'Ott Lite'. It uses a real glass tube, and if that thing falls, *POP*, and I'm vacuuming the whole room where that thing was when it shattered. I would be happy if a 'smart light' broke, because cleaning up after it falling would be a snap. Definitely quicker than vacuuming up a shattered fluorescent tube, and finding shards for days afterwards. (Sometimes in my feet)

Second reason: It's likely to be lighter. Not a bad thing. I mean, the base should be 'heavy', but given point one, it's not a deal breaker.

Third reason: Dimming. I really have issues with this current light. I can't dim it. I get BLAZING OTT LIGHT, or *nothing*. It's almost like those old 'cops and robbers' movies where the cops bring in a searing bright light to 'sweat out a confession'. I'll pass...

Fourth reason: This is a stretch for me, but you can change the color temperature of the light produced. No lights when I was growing up had that capability. I think I'd probably spend the next half hour playing with the different light 'temperatures' just to see how they change the world I live in.

I was rather bummed that it was 'unavailable'. I could see it being a usable light for ALL of the above reasons, knowing that I'll probably find a 'temperature' and a 'dimming', and never change it. It's still a lot more usable, and safer than the alternative I have.

Why not a smart lamp. At least in my case... I'd buy one... (I won't buy the Dyson light. Sorry)

Surely a dimmer switch would suffice? Maybe add a power saving bulb for good measure, but I really don’t see the need for a complicated light source compared to multimedia etc

As in all things, you do you. I've been told that the Ott-Light does not support dimmers, but dimming is the least of the issues.

But, don't want one, don't buy one. Simple. I find some of them far too complicated, and too many are built far too cheaply, so I tend not to buy these. I've also had far to many 'cheap' fluorescent lights that die prematurely (and I dare you to find parts).

But no one can buy a light that isn't in stock. That is the truth right there. They didn't know that Amazon would sell their lights like band-aids at a knife fight? Oops...

Fair shout mate, I was just discussing the necessity as opposed to preaching to the masses as it were. I’m quite interested in the reasoning for all the additional automation these days aye

Well, a few days later and two out three of my Meross outlets have dropped out of the Home app. Also unreachable by the Meross app. 🤷‍♂️

That's really weird! I very occasionally get a slow response from my garage door opener, and an outside water feature which is connected to a Meross smart plug in the garage, but that's not surprising given that my garage is a separate building, about 10 yards away from my house. The WiFi signal is very weak out there, so I was surprised they work at all! Honestly, a Meross smart plug was my first HomeKit smart device, and it works so much better than I expected that it's the reason I started buying more smart kit.

It's vexing as hell, but I don't know what else to try.
