I started a thread and was getting responses in the thread but no message alerts showing up in the bell-shaped icon in the toolbar.

it's working for me. You don't see one here?

Did you somehow turn off Alerts for Watched threads?

"Watching" is what gives you the alerts.

No, I didn't change any settings, and this is what I currenlty have...

The Message Alerts (i.e. red bell) seems to be working now, but it wasn't earlier this afternoon...
