Message App not staying in conversation

Hey everyone,

I'm on iOS 16.1 on the iPhone 11 Pro Max and noticed that a lot of the times, if I leave the message app for a bit and come back, it doesn't stay in the conversation and brings me back to the list of messages.

Has anyone been noticing this on their side?

Not happening for me on 16.1. Even if I close the app (not just switch to another app) and then re-open it, it still opens exactly where I left off.

Ironically, when googling this for you, I found two posts of people wanting it to behave like you describe!

I have the bug too on a 14 Pro Max with 16.1.1

I have the bug as well. I have a 14, and the message bug started with 16.1. I thought 16.1.1 would fix it, but nope. It's not super annoying, but I do have one or two people who text me regularly, and I'd like the app to stay in those conversations...

I have a new theory on a fix for this. Try turning off the ‘Focus’ switch under Messages in settings. Let me know if this works for you.

Update: this doesn’t work unfortunately.

I'm on the 16.2(a) beta on the 14 Pro, and the bug is still present.

It’s actually the last bug I have on iOS 16. Really hope they fix it in the next release as it kinda spoils the experience for me.

Same, tried the theory and it didnt work for me as well. Was hoping that iOS 16.2 would fix it but from the reports, sadly not.

How about this for a possible workaround: Tap into the message text input box in the message thread you want to remain in...as if you're about to write a message. Does this work?

New experiment: I’ve just reinstalled the iOS ipsw to see if that fixes the issue. A ‘nuke and pave’ approach.

UPDATE: That didn’t work. It just seems to be a software bug that needs to be solved on Apple’s side I guess.

This behaviour still exists in the RC version of 16.2

Hoping Apple sees the bug report feedback to resolve this asap. It’s been frustrating on iOS 16.

I wouldn’t hold my breath on this one. I’ve kinda given up on it. Trying to just get used to the ‘new’ behaviour.

They responded to my bug report saying it is working as expected.
