I heard Rene Ritchie explain it on MacBreak Weekly that the 3D Touch for the Messages app is suppose to be predictive Siri feature where the 3 contacts can change depending on frequency and time of the day you are likely to contact them.
Well that's useless.

The feature is pointless unless you know who will be there when you press the app

Unless you can manually select some 'favourites' (and on the phone app too), then 3D Touch is useless in this instance.

I have five favourites set up in the phone app and yet none appear when I use 3D Touch on the phone app icon.

The only way it can really be of use is if the user can manually set the contacts to message.

Even if force touch brings up the last 3 people you messaged (it doesn't) you could still forget who you last messaged when you wake up in the morning for example.

Every single time you force touch you need to know exactly who will be in the list otherwise this time saving feature is pointless and you may as well just open the app.

If the apple devs truly used these features instead of just dreaming them up, it would be glaringly obvious that the current messaging force touch impimentation is not fit for purpose.

I have sent many messages and made many phonecalls, yet using 3D Touch in the phone app only brings up 'create contact' and in the messaging app 'new message'. Admittedly both options are better than some random contacts but still, how much real time does this feature save? The only time it actually helps me on homescreen icons is with the camera app.

Completely agree! They need to give us the option. To set our top 3 contacts along with the new message option!

Yeah, hopefully they will give us the option to choose the people that appear under 3D touch. For me since I don't really call/text many people it's pretty useful.

So here's a random thought. I looked at the three contacts that keep popping up on my messages during 3D Touch and there seems to be one thing in common with these three...the intent or the emotion of the conversation. My three most common ones that show up are conversations that I've used an emotional tone with and words like "love". Is it possible it's that smart or is this a coincidence too??
