On macOS, I have noticed, even if my Messages app is not open or running, I still get notifications. To not get the notifications, I have to turn notifications off, in Settings.
Would you say that this is working as designed? Am coming from a Windows environment. So, to me, if an application is not open or running, it should not receive notifications.
