Messages app causes Mac to overheat?

Using my M1 Mac for ordinary things (email, web browsing), I noticed my keyboard feeling unusually warm. I checked TG Pro, and it reported my performance cores were over 200°F. My battery indicator indicated Messages was using significant energy. I closed Messages, and my Mac's temperature readings immediately started falling. Within a couple minutes, performance cores were at 98-110°F.

Why in the world would Messages demand so much energy? I wasn't even actively using it at the time (not that it should make a noticeable difference even if I was). I think this must be a bug, but I've never experienced it before. I'm on 11.4 (20F71).

I re-opened Messages, and the temps held steady.

I've had multiple times now where Messages has been consuming 100% CPU, must be a bug when displaying certain media. On my Intel MacBook Pro it also causes my discrete GPU to be turned on, and the only fix is to quit and re-launch. This has been happening for over a year so its a long standing issue.

Yeah it sounds like a garden variety infinite loop kind of bug. Report it to Apple. If I see it in Monterey I’ll report it through beta feedback. More likely to get examined that way.
