Messages app on AW3 is not updating once read on iPhone 11 pro max

I've reset my Apple Watch 3, watchOS 6.1.1 two times now. For a short period of time my messages on AW3 and iPhone 11 pro Max would sync together, in the beginning. or at least I thought so. Meaning, if I had read the message on my iPhone and then go to my watch, it would shown as 'read'. Vice versa, if the message was read on the watch. Check iMessage on iPhone. The message would appear 'read'. (no badge count) Seems after awhile it stopped. The badge/count for messages on my watch face never updates, if I had read it on my iPhone. I thought watchOS 6 was suppose to fix this or be a new feature back and forth push/syncing between the too. My watch settings are set to 'Mirror' iPhone. Any help would be great. (Tried to search, but this Apple watch forum is a mess. I don't understand why there's not just a watchOS thread like iOS/iPadOS has.)

I know mirror 'should' work, but try using custom and chose the options you want and see if that helps.

It does work for me that way. The only step I need to make sure I do is hit the button at the bottom of the screen on the watch if I read it there (something like ‘read’ or ‘dismiss’). If I’m doing it the other way (phone to watch), I don’t have to do anything special.
