Why the hell does the scrolling in the messages app go really jerky all the time??
I mean it's so smooth in mail for example, and even if you go into a thread in messages it's a lot smoother than the list of threads view.
I've got a ip7+ with 10.2. Just don't get it, don't Apple notice these things? Maybe it's related to how many messages I've got, it's probably several thousand all in

The list view is directly read from the storage while the thread view is buffered in RAM.
That's why.

Not convinced guys. I set it to only include messages from 1 year, that will mean there's is only about 150-200 messages now. I'm not a heavy user of messages use more WhatsApp. It's still laggy as hell. When I look at WhatsApp l, which has many more messages in it, the thing is very smooth. Sorry but apple haven't coded the messages app very well

If you have a whole years worth of conversation from someone and you are trying to scroll up, yes it will lag due to the volume if info that is in that thread, try someone that you don't have much history on, maybe a week or 2, i bet it doesn't lag.

again, set to only do 30 days

Or its probably a software bug.
Restore it with iTunes and setup as new.
You will lose your thousands of old messages but your device will run a lot smoother.
Your choice.

My device runs very smooth. With apps such as whatsapp and Facebook messenger it's really smooth. It's just Apples messages app.

This should not be causing any lag at all with only 150-200 messages. When I used iMessage daily I would probably send 50+ messages per day to the same user and I never had any lag at all. I easily would have had conversations with over 1,000 messages and never used the setting for keeping them for a year or 30 days. Not sure why you're experiencing this type of lag.

Have you tried deleting the message threads and starting over to see if the same behavior occurs with say only 20-30 messages in the conversation?

The OP also said he rarely uses iMessage. Which would mean even though it's 150-200 messages, they're stored on the ssd and are nowhere near readily and quickly available because he doesn't need them often. As opposed to a frequent used app like WhatsApp.

No, you're right. I mean Apple never ever make a mistake do they. Must be a bug, or a feature maybe. I am afraid it's you who is in denial
[doublepost=1484391341][/doublepost]And even if it's a bug...surely that is Apples fault too??

Even if it's ready from the storage I'd say that's not a reason for lag as the read speed is over 200MBytes/second. It's definitely and issue with the software. As mentioned above you can either start from scratch or put up with it.

easy fix, settings/imessages Keep messages 30 days

Definitely a create feature to have. But you should also exercise deleting conversations cause many conversations will still take up storage and slow things down.

Curious if anyone has run into this issue:

When I open Messages in landscape, the screen is in portrait. Only way to get it into landscape is to flip it into portrait and then back to landscape. However, this only works if I'm backed out into the screen showing all my threads rather than in a conversation.

I have:

- Hard reset
- Hard reset and set up the phone as new

Nothing worked. Called Apple Care. Rep I spoke to said he's encountered it himself and spoke to a few others who have as well. His only recommendation was to hope Apple releases a bug fix.

Anyone experience this and maybe know of a fix?

Its their fault, if you want to fix the software bug I told you what you need to do.
If not then dont. Its up to you.
