Messages Complication Showing false number of unread messages

My AW4 running the latest watch os shows in the modular face messages complication, a random number of unread messages. It used to be 12, and then i tried restarting both the phone and watch and it is showing 7 now. I have no unread messages and my iPhone X is on the latest version of iOS.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

My watch does this when I randomly get 1:1 responses to group texts. I have to actually go down the list of messages on the watch, and I see that the response (always from someone on Android) started a new thread. But on the phone the message is part of the group.

I have to think this is an iOS13/wOS6 bug.

Yes. I just scroll through the watch and find the unread message and open it just to make the numbers match. Happened again over the weekend.

that did the trick. i did not realize the messages app on the watch will show you which are unread! thank you.
