For the past 2 years I have had my Mac set to keep messages forever, and keep last 30 days on my iOS devices. The Mac serving as the backup of the full message history. I decided to go ahead and try out iCloud message sync. I have enabled messages in iCloud on the Mac, but not yet on the iOS devices.

I noticed that Messages takes up 6.89GB on my Mac, but somehow 12.9GB in iCloud.

Any reason for the large size discrepancy? I use the 50Gb iCloud tier. Worried I could fill it up with messages.

I can't answer the size discrepancy, but regarding filling up your 50GB: if you've only got 30 days of messages on your iOS devices then the total amount of storage that would be used can't be much more than 13GB for all of your devices.
