Hi, when I got my new xs I backed it up from my old phone. I put them close together as things were transferring and so on. Now a day later all photos etc are downloaded.
The only thing that’s missing are the conversations in messages.
Initially all I got was only a small part of the message history. Some random older messages.
Now it just won’t download. I tried disabling messages for iCloud then remove all of the conversations and then enable messages again, thinking it would start over. Nope, now I’ve got no conversation history at all.
Is there a way to make it download it all?

hi
when you say "remove all of the conversations" how specifically did you do that?
did you actually succeed in deleting them while you were only attempting to see if the off/on button would restart the sync progress?

I turned off icloud sync for messages then selected all conversations and deleted them. Then enabled iCloud messages again.

they most likely are therefore deleted.
I don’t think so, that was mostly old messages from a year or more back. For some reason that’s the only ones that showed up after restoring my new phone from the iCloud backup.

I can still see that there are about 1.5GB in messages data on iCloud. And my old phone still has all of it.
It just won’t show up on my new phone.
[doublepost=1538726588][/doublepost]This didn’t go as smooth as I’d hoped. So I’m just gonna remove all conversation history on both devices as well as iCloud and start over

understood.
its a hassle to do, but logging out of iCloud on yr iPhone then logging back in to iCloud could also trigger it if the messages are still there on the iCloud.

Alright, thanks. I might try that first.

This is a known issue with iMessage right now, as there have been a few other threads stating this same behavior. One method that seems to help is turning off iMessage in iCloud, disabling iMessage, then going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

You'll have to log back in to your WiFi networks and re-establish your notification/location settings, but your messages should start downloading again. Just make sure the phone is plugged in and connected to WiFi.
