I’ve had this issue for a while now and it’s driving me crazy. The messages on my Apple Watch 6 show 99+ notifications even though I do not have any unread messages on my iPhone. I have the mirror my iPhone enabled, have tried setting my watch up as a brand new and same issue.

Is there anyway I can get this to show an accurate unread message count on my Apple Watch?

Welcome to Apple Watch where notifications don’t sync up on messages or mail. To be honest Apple Mail and Messages sync inaccurately on across all devices in these apps most times and if you have SMS text then forget about it.

My Mail is completely in sync and never any issues. It’s just Messages. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mine was in sync until the last few months. If there is fix, I would love to hear it.

It's not that much of a problem. At my desk is my Mac, iPHone and wearing my Apple Watch. But, when away, the lag can be an issue sometimes.

On your phone, open the Watch app -> General -> Reset -> Reset Sync Data.

This should reset the syncing. It's not a full reset, so you won't have to go through the pairing and setup process.

Thanks!! I’ll have to try this as well. Similar issue here too

I had problems with messaging and it was because one system was logged into my Apple ID, and the other system was logged in to my Apple IP alias. I'm still not sure exactly what the problem is in this case, but apparently it makes a difference. Weird, and frustrated me for months, over a year. *shrug* Posting this in case it might help.
