My wife's iPhone 13 on iOS 16.0.3 paired with her Apple Watch SE (watchos 9.0.2) never has her watch ding or shows notifications for messages (apple Messages) received. ALL other apps do notifications on her watch, including the sound and the taptic and the notification listed on her watch screen. The notifications for Messages always DO show on her iPhone lock screen, but with no accompanying sound.

YES, I have looked at the obvious things:
  • In watch Notification settings: set to Mirror iPhone
  • iPhone Messages settings notifications set to show banner on, sound on, etc.
  • DnD is NOT on (remember, all other notifications happen)
  • phone not on mute, watch not on mute or DnD either
  • phone screen off, so notifications of all apps (except Messages) shows on watch instead of phone face just fine
  • conversations in question are not muted
  • I have unpaired, erased, and re-paired the watch NOT WITH BACKUP but from scratch. it didn't help.
  • Only thing I haven't done: rebuilding from full erase the PHONE. That would suck horribly.

Forgot to add: Also, after I send her a text, not only does her watch not ding but when she DOES open her watch to the notifications that have stacked up, there are notifications but NOT for anything from Apple Messages. Plenty for gmail, New York Times, other things. But never Messages. So it isn't just a sound issue. I thought she was going crazy until i borrowed her watch and phone to test this.

Just a thought - On the Watch go to Settings -> tap on your wife's name which will be right at the top. Now tap on Name, Phone Numbers, and eMail. Under "Reachable at" it should show the phone number of the iPhone it is paired to (under the number it will say iMessage.). You can manually add a phone number if it is not correct.

That is the only thing I can think of that you haven't indicated you checked.

nope - that setting was all good. I'm gonna install the new iOS (16.1) and watchos later today on her stuff and see if any of that fixes it. Sigh...

I'm having a sort of similar problem since my watch updated.. basically my watch DOES vibrate when I am getting an iMessage, but it doesnt appear on the watch, nor do i see it in my notifications. Its on my phone only. If I go to the messages app on my watch its there, but not as a notification. Anyone else having this sort of an issue?
