Anyone having this issue? Basically my watch says I have unread messages (with the number on the complication and everything) with the blue dots by the message threads in the app. However I have read all of the messages on my iPhone, and the only way to get rid of them is to read them on the watch.

This recently started happening to me after I got my iPhone X. Any ideas?

I’m having the same issue...I’m also thinking it started happening around the same time as the acquisition of the iPhone X as well

I had the same thing. Power down both devices, bring up the iPhone X then, then bring up the Watch. The Watch will then start notifying of you of all your messages. Once it's up to sync, it should stay. Mine has.

I am having a similar issue except I get notifications for messages that I have muted on the phone yet they appear on my watch. The phone keeps them silent. So maybe this is the issue the settings DB is out of synch. The master is the phone so this makes sense as to the order of operations.

Thanks for the idea. if that does not work then I will wipe the watch and repair. I did have this happen just after the purchase of an X. I wonder if there is some sort of X specific bug.

Thanks, just did this and it's working great now!

I am still having messages show up that should be should be muted. I jiggled the mirror setting in the watch app. The situation cleared up and then just came right back. I am going to re-synch the watch today and give that a try.

I am having same issue after getting iPhone X. I checked all settings and the mirror setting was off for some reason, put it back and it fixed for a bit now it is doing the same thing.

Trying the power off both devices solution and see how that works.

This is real frustrating... I do notice it seems to be only iMessages and not SMS I get from coworkers on their androids.

Guys, I’ve tried all the suggestions from this thread and other threads. No luck. I STILL have unread messages showing on my Apple Watch despite already having read them on my phone. This started happening for me when I upgraded from an iPhone 7 Plus to an XR. Any other ideas?

I noticed my iPhone XR started having this issue after I activated the esim and having two phone line running together. It seems like a bug for the iOS 12.1.2, come on Apple...

[doublepost=1547865197][/doublepost]I have also tried everything and no luck. Changed phones from 8 plus to XS. Super Frustrated!

Powering down both and turning them back on fixed this for me.

However my constant issue is when I delete any kind of message (I hate digital “clutter” so I only keep text strings from the same few people and one group) and later on someone “reacts” to something in the text that’s been deleted, like when they had pressed on the reply and chosen “haha” or the “!!!” bubble. Then it stays on my watch as a ghost message and the notification won’t clear.

I attempted the powerdown on both and the problem continues. I did clear all unread messages so maybe it will start from this point forward. Thanks for helping.

I to have had the same problem after switching to an XS. I have been troubleshooting with Apple since Oct!! I have spent countless hours on the phone with them downloading files to send to their engineers and still nothing!! They will not replace either device until they know for sure it cannot be fixed. Super frustrated as I have a device that I cannot use it for what it was intended for! I was hoping this latest update for both would correct it..nope!!

I’ve noticed that if I actually go into each message on my iPhone, which of course changed the status of the mail to opened, my watch will reflect this read status almost immediately, however if I’m selecting multiple messages from my inbox to then change the status to ‘mark as read’ for all of them, this doesn’t update on my watch, and they all remain unread only on my watch although the phone is showing read, so the issue is with marking multiple emails to read status not singular. Is this everyone else’s experience?

I’m having the same issue since I switched to the IPhone XS. I’ve tried erasing all data from both iPhone and Apple Watch with no luck. Signing out of my Apple ID on my phone did fix the problem but that’s not a viable solution. Apple is pulling data from my phone but I feel like they’re not going to find anything. Let me know if they found a fix for you.

Same issue when I upgraded to XS from the 7. Did you find a solution?

I specifically signed up to comment on this thread as this issue has been a major pain in rear. I think this might be solved for me after spending about an hour with Apple in this. I previously had and Apple iPhone X, then moved to an XS Max. I don't recall if I ever unpaired the watch before resetting that the factory. However, when I got the new phone I paired to the watch no problem. This issue happened. I followed all kinds of suggestions, up to resetting the watch to factory and setting it up as a new watch (no restore from backup) to the new phone...still, the issue happened.
- First thing (I did not have this problem, but support suggested it) - Check to make sure you didn't block your own phone number. Some people do this after receiving spoof phone calls from their own number.
- Second thing (This seems to have fixed it for me) - On your phone, go to Settings -> General -> Reset and "Reset All Settings". This will not erase your account setup (you will need to setup passcode and faceid again) or text messages, emails or apps, photos, etc., but it will erase settings pertaining to WiFi, your background customization, and access for apps to cellular data.

I've only been messing with it for a couple hours, but have sent texts back and forth with people on sms texts and iMessage going both ways and checking my phone has marked it read on my watch and vice versa. I hope this helps. This is an ongoing issue and I don't think I've actually seen it figured out yet. I hope this works for everyone. Please reply if it solved it for you so that we can help other annoyed souls get their watch back in sync.

No, I didn’t. I went into the Apple store and they were gonna recommend everything I’ve already tried from online forums. They said I could send in my watch to be looked at for $100, but... yeah right.

So I just upgraded to an Apple Watch Series 3 yesterday (partially to get this issue fixed) and... IT STILL DOESNT WORK. So... I’m now assuming that it is an XR issue. I tried from a backup and as a new watch.

I haven’t tried resetting my phone settings yet (see post below) as that sounds super annoying, but that might be my last resort here soon.

It’s been working like a charm for me. I’m thinking maybe the problem is something it brings over if you restore your old phone from a backup onto the new one. Resetting the settings (not factory) on the phone is a minor annoyance, but there isn’t that much to do. It’s far less annoying than the issue with the watch not being in sync. I haven’t had to do much apart from setting my Face ID again and changing my wallpaper. And actually, the phone seems to function better now. When I get an iMessage from someone on the phone, the banner shows “iMessage” and then the message. I’ve actually never seen that. So I think it reset some other things that weren’t quite how they were supposed to be as well.

Interesting. Okay, you’ve talked me into it. I guess I didn’t want to lose all my Wifi info, but you’re right - not a big deal if it fixes it. I’ve never seen that iMessage banner either. I’ll give it a whirl tonight and let you know. Thanks!
