Just to tack on. I had to set up my alarms again and re-enable my Apple wallet, though all of my wallet content was still there. I’ll add more of I find anything. Text sync still working with the watch just fine.

.
Interesting. Okay, you’ve talked me into it. I guess I didn’t want to lose all my Wifi info, but you’re right - not a big deal if it fixes it. I’ve never seen that iMessage banner either. I’ll give it a whirl tonight and let you know. Thanks!
It worked!!!! Thank you! Woo-hoo!

- Second thing (This seems to have fixed it for me) - On your phone, go to Settings -> General -> Reset and "Reset All Settings". This will not erase your account setup (you will need to setup passcode and faceid again) or text messages, emails or apps, photos, etc., but it will erase settings pertaining to WiFi, your background customization, and access for apps to cellular data.

Well, I bit the bullet and reset all settings, and at first IT WORKED... but as I went through settings, putting things back to how I want, I found that once I turned “iMessage” back on again, the issue came right back.
Turn iMessage off again, and it’s fine.
Calling Apple again tomorrow now that I think this is pretty well pinpointed. They NEED to fix this. Been pissing me off since September when I got XS.

Interesting. I’ve had iMessage turned on the whole time. I’ll make sure I kind of set each thing one by one as they come up and test to make sure.
[doublepost=1552053999][/doublepost]...also, I did NOT have “send as SMS” turned on. I enabled that now, so we’ll see.

No, I didn’t. I went into the Apple store and they were gonna recommend everything I’ve already tried from online forums. They said I could send in my watch to be looked at for $100, but... yeah right.

So I just upgraded to an Apple Watch Series 3 yesterday (partially to get this issue fixed) and... IT STILL DOESNT WORK. So... I’m now assuming that it is an XR issue. I tried from a backup and as a new watch.

I haven’t tried resetting my phone settings yet (see post below) as that sounds super annoying, but that might be my last resort here soon.

I went to apple and they tested it by activating an iwatch 4 to my phone. tThe problem was still there so they gave me a new iPhone XS. It still did not solve the problem. what I did to fix the issue was I went to iCloud.com and turned on "Find my iPhone" on my watch and MacBook and it corrected the issue. Finally, messages erases on my watch when I read it on my phone!

Try going to iCloud.com and log in. look for find my device and turn on watch and any other devices you have. It worked for me.

This annoyed me for months and the Apple Store just told me to wait and see if a software update fixes it. None did. I found that if you have your Apple ID as a send and receive option in message settings SMS messages will not show as read on the watch after you read them on the phone. If just the phone number is listed there it seems to work the way it is supposed to. This worked for me at least.

I’m having the same issue since I switched to the IPhone XS. I’ve tried erasing all data from both iPhone and Apple Watch with no luck. Signing out of my Apple ID on my phone did fix the problem but that’s not a viable solution. Apple is pulling data from my phone but I feel like they’re not going to find anything. Let me know if they found a fix for you.

Same issue when I upgraded to XS from the 7. Did you find a solution?
No, after MANY times spending hours downloading from watch and phone to send to Apple engineers. They came to the conclusion that it should be fixed within the next couple of updates...it didn't happen with the first one.

can someone clarify if I should reset all settings or reset network settings? thanks!

So, this worked at first, but then it made my apple watch not work on the cellular network without wifi or bluetooth connection.

I am very frustrated that I seem to get one or the other.

I signed up just to reply. I took your advice, and went to iCloud.com and noticed my old watch was still listed. I removed my old watch from find my iPhone, and it fixed everything. I hope it continues working, because this has been a huge pain for me constantly having 99+ messages to go into, and clear 1 by 1. I never thought to check if my old watch was still listed, and remove it. Thanks for the help!!

Yep, Iv still got it too. Watch, iPad, Mac, build up tons of “unread” messages.
Unbelievable. How have they not
Fixed this. Iv called them, iv sent feedback. Idk what else to do, but it frustrates the hell out of me.

Yeah me too! I even went to the genius bar and they were super helpful but they were all literally dumbfounded by it. I can only hope the new iOS may help. We were going to send my watch off to get figure it out but bc it wasn't physically damaged they weren't able to send it at all.. super annoying. When i went in i didn't even realize my mac was doing the same thing :(

I feel it’s definitely an issue on the phone’s side.
Fingers crossed that 13 takes care of it, otherwise I’m gonna scream.

This happens to my friend with her S4 & XS Max. I haven’t paired my S4 to my XS yet & I’m glad I didn’t. Guess it’ll stay paired to my X until this issue gets corrected!!

The imminent release of iPadOS/iOS 13 Apple Watch OS 6 and macOS Catalina upgrades in September should fix all of these problems by default but in the mean time I found that setting up the watch as new (rather than restoring from a backup) fixes most things as far as syncing goes.
If like me it is your first Apple Watch you’ll probably find there was a lot of stuff you didn’t really need.

Anyone having this issue? Basically my watch says I have unread messages (with the number on the complication and everything) with the blue dots by the message threads in the app. However I have read all of the messages on my iPhone, and the only way to get rid of them is to read them on the watch.

This recently started happening to me after I got my iPhone X. Any ideas?

I was able to correct this on my iPhone XR / Apple Watch Series 4 by performing the following steps:
On iPhone, open Apple Watch App > Messages > choose custom > Repeat Alerts > change to Never.

I believe the watch is by default repeating the alerts from the phone, therefore appearing to not sync "read" messages from phone.

Update after a couple of days of monitoring how this went. The problem is corrected for about 90% of the time, but still is flaky and doesn't "always" mark the messages as read on my watch. Much better than before though.

I'm having the same issue, but it didn't start until i switched carriers. I went from verizon to at&t. I have the xs max and a series 4 watch and its driving me crazy

Well, it’s FINALLY FIXED for me. iOS 13 immediately fixed it. I hope everyone else has the same experience.

i’ve updated both my Watch and my iPhone XR to the latest iOS. Nothing has changed. Nothing has been fixed.

I have a long list of SMS messages in the Messages app on my watch that I long since deleted on my phone.

Aside from this infuriating bug, the Messages app on the Watch is utterly useless for two reasons:

1) it doesn’t have an unread messages view.
2) there’s no quick way to delete large numbers of messages. They must be deleted one at a tome, via a ridiculously cumbersome multi-step process.

I have restarted my phone and watch in different sequences. I wasnt ready to do a reset to my phone(xrs). I turned imessages off and on again. It seems to have resolved the issue. I will give it a week and give you an update.

Well, it was nice while it lasted. Updated to 13.2 today and now the issue returned. I’m pretty pissed. I had been perfect since 13.0 came out.
I submitted it on Apples feedback page. May call them tomorrow. It makes me hate my watch.

Same here with the latest update. Funny thing is my iPad marks all messages read just fine. Same with my Apple Watch. It’s just when I read them on my iPhone they stay unread on my Watch and iPad.
I have a potential solution but you’re not gonna like it:

Disable messages in iCloud. Let it download. Reboot. Delete all messages on the iPhone. Enable back messages in iCloud, it should sync back previous messages.

last time I did this, it fixed the issues on iPad. But I lost some messages and pics wouldn’t download from previous ones. But new messages work fine.

I am scared to try it again. Lol.

Hmm, I may have to suck it up and try.
I don’t even use messages in the cloud though so that won’t effect me.
Absolutely ridiculous that everything was perfect for me after 13, but 13.2 ruined it!
