Is this happening to anyone else? I think it occurs if I open Messages immediately after a restart as soon as the desktop appears. It’ll bounce for a long time and eventually stop bouncing but there’s no dot under the icon or visible window. I have to force quit Messages from the Apple menu and restart. Other times it’ll open normally or sometimes after a few bounces.

On a clean install 11.0.1. Messages in iCloud is enabled.

Yes, same issue on a clean install as well. But had it only for the first 4-5 starts of Big Sur. Have 4 user accounts on that MacBook, and it happened on each of them. Now, after a week of using the Mac it seems to be gone and Messages opens quickly.

Thanks, that's good to hear. I was worried it could've corrupted the messages database or something, but mine seems to open up normally now as well. Oddly, mine worked fine the first few boots, then one random boot it decided not to open at all. Then it went back to working OK!

Same issue on fresh install. Some bugs still need to be squashed, I'm sure it'll get better.
Mine happened again. It was after a restart. This time I waited a few minutes after booting and also opened a few other system apps first. I waited for Messages to stop bouncing and then force quit. It wouldn’t open again until I restarted again.

for what it’s worth, when I force quit I chose to send a report to Apple. From what I could parse in the report, the app might be hanging while trying to sync contacts on launch, but I’m not sure...

Yeah, I also had to reboot.

For what is worth... haven't had such issues on a new macOS in years.
