Messages taking up space in storage

I have deleted all of my text messages and the usage for messages is 1.6GB. How do I clear these messages to free up some space on my phone? I have backed up to itunes and synced as well with no success! I really don't want to do a factory restore either. Anyone have this problem and/or any suggestions?? Thank you!

When that happened to me, I did a hard reset and that took care of it
