Meta today announced the launch of Instants, a new image sharing option on the Instagram social network. Instants are ephemeral photos that disappear from Instagram after they're viewed by a user's friends or after a 24-hour period.

Reactions and replies to Instants images show up in DMs instead of on the post. Instants photos are only displayed for a short period, but they are saved to a user's archive for a year and can be reshared to Stories. Instants cannot be edited, with no option for filters, stickers, or modifications beyond captions. That sets them apart from Stories, which is already an Instagram feature.

Instants is an Instagram feature, but Meta has also developed a standalone Instants companion app "for quicker camera access." The standalone app is a direct competitor to Snapchat, the original ephemeral image social network. The new app can be used for sharing Instants, but on Instagram, users can also share Instants from a new camera option in the Direct Messages section of the app.

Instants can be viewed on Instagram by opening up DMs and tapping on the new Instants box in the bottom right corner of the inbox. Photos can be shared with friends set as close friends, or as mutuals, aka followers that an Instagram user follows back. Instants are not able to be screenshotted or screen recorded, providing privacy features not available with other Instagram image types.

Meta says that Instants are designed for casual, everyday photos. The standalone app is limited to select countries, as Meta says that it is an experiment. Images shared on the Instants app will show up for friends on Instagram, and images shared on Instagram will show up in the Instants app.

Instants on Instagram is available globally starting today, and the app is also available for download in countries where it is supported.

Snapchat already exists, and does what it was designed to do quite well. Who needs yet another ******** app to duplicate the same functionality? Pass.
My guess is that Meta wants a piece of that piece. If you can have people send photos back and forth on Instagram you can slowly ween people off Snapchat in the same way you can move people from X onto Threads. They would argue that it means you don't have to have 3 separate accounts for social media when you can just use your Instagram handle across their apps.

Nah, I’m good.
Thanks for your contribution!

What do you think competition is?

Snapchat has one of the most atrocious interfaces I’ve ever seen and had the displeasure of using. Instants looks far cleaner and lacks Discover and Spotlight* brainrot sections. I’m willing to bet Instants won’t stay this way forever, but the brainrot is relegated to the main Instagram app for now.

*Spotlight is a duplicate of TikTok, Shorts, etc as each company wants to have everything.

Part of me of course despises this because of what it is and who it's from. But part of me wants to see Snapchat go away. But then I remember how much I hate Meta/Zuck/Facebook/all of it.

I don't know who to root for the downfall of! Both, I guess.

About the only selling point of this app is people that see it on your phone won't immediately realize you're cheating on someone. Unless it becomes popular, which is 50/50 with Meta knockoffs.

In the past, Mark Zuckerberg expressed interest in acquiring Snapchat for a substantial sum. However, Snapchat declined his offer. Subsequently, Zuckerberg implemented a series of incremental actions in retaliation. Presently, his complete revenge has been realized.

Thank goodness I don't use any meta products. (At least, not directly.) Glad I made the decision to avoid all those years ago though I understand why many went with some of their products.

copying a know feature by a company that's bazzilion times bigger is not "competition". it's rather a lack of regulatory oversight that ket crappy FB/meta siphon all the competition... and at this point whatever they can't buy / kill they just copy and extinguish...

i dont need another snapchat
im tired of temporary connections. anyone i have added on snap feels like throwaway connections to me that i stopped using it

Regarding "Sharing Disappearing Photos", I find these types of platforms kinda juvenile compared to more mature chat platforms that have the same functionality but also include a forever style edit button that allows sharing with retraction capabilities:

Can we get a more fully featured fully functioning edit button across the meta suite of chat platforms? Including Whatsapp and messenger?

By fully featured I mean to match the type of edit button present on platforms like slack, Microsoft teams chat, etc…

what's nice about a proper edit button is that it transforms the “static-ness” of sms and email into something thats better for peace of mind, digital wellbeing, with regards to ownership of our sent messages / digital footprint. I'm not saying all business has to take place on platforms like that - more official business can still take place on more static traditional platforms like sms and email or any static platforms. But we already have dozens of those types of services. To set itself apart, more platforms should embrace a more canvas style edit button friendly design.

Looking for a canvas-like chat platform alternative to slack, teams chat, google chat, discord, telegram, whatsapp, signal, Google docs etc

When I say canvas, I just mean that the platform should have an edit button that works forever. For example, currently using Microsoft teams chat with a few of those close to me, not for daily comms, but more of a long term occasional few messages etc.

I know it seems like I've mentioned a lot but they're all kinda missing *something* in a way

- Slacks issue is cost - it's not free

- Microsoft teams chat - best solution so far except not buttery smooth for daily use

- Google chat - close but no cigar - glad they finally added the edit button a few years back. However, I need an alternative like this, but that, we can also add images to sent posts, like we can on slack on and Microsoft teams chat. If they added that capability, this would be nice

Discord - ok for online people but not the brand I'm looking for to use for close family members

Telegram - initially was my go-to around 2016-2019 for online people kinda like discord; works smoothly, app is good, tried in 2020/2021 to use for close family but I moved on to Google docs / Google chat because the edit button is limited to 48 hours. I prefer how the edit button works forever on slack, teams, gchat, discord etc

Whatsapp - E2EE and multiple devices is solid and of interest. but I’m also just as interested in the type of edit slack, microsoft teams chat / Google chat, because the edit button works forever - whatsapp only gives 15 minutes, so it's edsentially like SMS/email, fine for certain things but I'm looking for a generous edit button which Whatsapp lacks

Sometimes we may want to share text or pictures passively without actively notifying a recipient. this allows us to share a message, a link, a picture, or a set of pictures, without having to send a brand new message.

But really the whole dynamic changes when you allow a more canvas friendly forever style edit button. It allows a chat to take place more in the background slowly kind of like sharing a Google doc or text note with someone, but with the structure of a chat platform. For example:

A messenger with a full fledged edit button makes conversions into a canvas.

Example:

Me :
Hey
-
-
-

Recipient:
Hi

-
-
-

me:

Testing 123…
-
-
-
Recipient:
Copy that
-
-
-

The dash marks are “blank messages”. If a person wants to edit those blank messages at a later time, they can do so without sending a notification.

I even tried putting some of this stuff into ai to ask for recommendations and it mentioned a platform called pumble
. I just wish larger more legitimate companies would do this.
