I see that Metro offers a $15 2GB plan.

Can I assume that one needs T MOBILE iPad to use the sim?

ALSO - if the Metro sim works in TMO devices how about the TMO MiFi?

Thanks for the comment. I visited a T Mobile store and was told my iPad Mini model 1 would not work with TMO even though GSM and unlocked it lacked the proper antenna. They said I needed a model 2 or later.

If then the model 2 would work with Metro then could I assume an UNLOCKED mi-fi from TMO would work as well?

I am really mystified by this. Metro has some nicely-priced tablet plans. However, unlike the phone plans, Metro will not activate a BYOD tablet. They will only activate tablets they sell, which consists of one crummy Alcatel 7" tab. I was really hoping to use an iPad Air on the $15 2GB plan.

I believe this began with ipad Air. All subsequent models are unlocked.

All iPads have always been unlocked (with the exception of those sold in Japan). I think the Air was the first to come with Apple SIM, which means no more carrier specific models. Before then, iPads were carrier specific, meaning they came with that carrier's SIM preinstalled. But they weren't locked, so you could buy a Verizon iPad, take out the SIM, pop in an AT&T SIM, and it would work. Since they now come with Apple SIM, you just buy an iPad, then when you first turn on cellular data, you get an option asking you which carrier you want to sign up with.

Unlocked is fine but does not help if the device does not have the proper antenna ant set up for TMO frequencies. Apples GSM iPhone 5 was re-released in April 2012 with such for TMO. Prior to that, one would only get Edge data, not LTE.

Not true... I had an iPad 2 back in the day with Verizon cell radio and it did NOT have a SIM card or slot...

I know Verizon didn't use SIM cards back then, but are you sure it didn't have a SIM card slot?

In any case, those iPads weren't locked to Verizon -- if another company used the same cellular system as Verizon, then they could be used with that other company.

Yeah, the 3G iPad 2 for Verizon lacked a SIM slot because Verizon doesn't use SIM cards for 3G.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I remember having the Verizon iPad 2 and no SIM card or tray for it. Wouldn't that mean it is locked to Verizon for data?

Oops, responded before looking at all of the recent messages.
