It’s atrocious. They copied one of the worst design choices of Apple, namely that extremely protruding camera module that houses a flash so close to the lens that subjects end up with red eye in still photos and glowing white eyes in videos. Another forum member and I were just talking about that in another part of the forum.

Then they put their front facing camera where most people tend to grip their phones. It’s a compilation of poor choices. Xiaomi can do much better.

And if that back camera module is truly identical to that of the iPhone X, and I did read that it is, owners will also have to worry about dust infiltration into the camera lens over time.

These are all problems that have me less inclined to take my husband’s iPhone X as a hand me down in a year or two and just tell him to trade it in for a discount on his next iPhone.

Xiaomi makes some really nice phones but this ain’t one of them.

Bleh, I doubt it will ever be available in the states. I don't think I'd like the nostril videos either having the camera in the chin. A notch is the way to go until they can figure out how to put a camera under the screen.

So, they move the front facing camera to the bottom of the phone to eliminate most of the top bezel?

For some of us (small number), having a rectangular screen is more important than having no bezels and having a notch intrude on that rectangle.

I never understood this, at least from a functional point of view. From an aesthetic point of view I completely disagree, but that does not mean either of us are wrong, just that we like different things. Functionally you actually gain screen space because you offload the status bar from the proper screen into the notched area. I know many get into a fit when they see elements of the screen proper in that notched area, but if you look at the dev guidelines they prohibit anything important from living there, so basically all you might get is the background extended there. Even with videos you can just tap and instantly get a true rectangle.

On one hand I think we could have all avoided this if phone makers just made the left/right areas around the notch blacked out in software all the time. But then again the status bar isn't always blacked out and I think that would have made things worse. What we are facing here is simply a physical dilemma of where to put the front sensors/cameras, and in reality there is no other place unless we want them on the bottom, or to pop up somehow.

Xiamoi doesn't impress me, Huawei does tho. I wish I could buy the P20 Pro in the United States

In essence, the notch creates a "soft" bezel... specifically when viewing fullscreen media. The "ears" turn black and the media is resized to fit within the non-notched area of the screen. So the iPhone X isn't actually bezel-less when viewing fullscreen media. Also, having rounded corners is something that I consider a novelty not something that is an enhancement. Having owned a Sharp Aquos Crystal for over 2 years, I've concluded that I'd rather that my phone be a rectangle having 3 bezel-less sides and a "chin" than having rounded corners and a notch.

I'd hate to have the camera on the bottom, not really into nostril videos. I do agree, the notch is still a bezel, but with the added benefit of saving screen real estate, but yeah it's still a bezel. I'd still prefer even an edge to edge bezel than having the camera at the bottom. I could also do without rounded corners, I put that level of uselessness right next to samsungs curved edges.

That sharp aquos is awesome, ignoring for a second the chin/bottom camera. I just wish they would have sold that in the states. It's a shame but I think they missed their opportunity, I think that aquos was out even before the Mi miix and was probably the first of the bezel less phones.

They DID sell the Sharp Aquos Crystal in the States. But it was only sold on 2 carriers... Sprint and their no-contract subsidiary BoostMobile (which is what I use and where I got mine) offered them. I understand that most people would not switch carriers simply for a phone. (except for the original iPhone that was an AT&T exclusive)

Nostril videos?

I don't take selfies, but on those occasions when using the front-facing camera I simply flipped the phone so that the camera was on top. :D

Ok let's be honest... If you want to do an edge to edge display withouth a notch having a bottom chin defeats the purpose of the whole thing.

I dig it. Will take a chin over a notch any day of the week.

Now I wouldn't bet on them implementing this but surely the camera could be coded so that if you turn the phone upside down to shoot, photos would be saved with the right orientation for viewing with the phone bottom down? That would solve the "nostril" problem would it not?

I've been honest. That is a reasonable conclusion to draw, but in actual experience for me, I found having 3 bezel-less sides and a "chin" to allow for a more immersive experience than having bezels all around.

It still has side bezels.

Oh yeah I remember now, lamenting the fact that I couldn't get it because it was on Sprint. From what I understand they have released newer models, but not in the states.

Yeah I hadn't thought of that, just flipping the phone upside down, kinda seems like common sense. In that case I wonder why so many complain about it then? Does Android allow a complete upside down flip like that, and will apps flip properly? I'm used to the iPhone which doesn't allow that, but I guess that's just a software change away. What about pictures and video, will they show up as upside down if viewing them with the phone right side up?

I just checked on my Samsung S9+ and lo and behold I can flip it upside down, take a selfie, and the selfie oriented properly when I went to view it in my gallery.

Just checked and this works on my iPhone 8 Plus, too.

Good question. I have no idea why people complained. I have some theories but they're just that, theories. It's a moot point since the Aquos Crystal isn't sold anymore, but it was able to handle videos and photos taken "upside-down". It was a great phone and a terrific media player with built-in Harmon Kardon audio processing. If Sharp offers an updated version of it, I'd drop my iPhone SE on the spot and get it.
