I've got a MacBook and I can't seem to find a mic input. I tired to use the port next to the headphone jack but it doesen't seem to be working...

There isn't one. Only a line in (the port next to the headphone jack). Other people can do a better job of explaining the difference between a mic and a line in port but essentially what it comes down to is that a line in needs a higher powered signal.

To connect a mic you need some sort of pre-amp. The iMic is a popular one but there are other options.

Correction. It CAN work as a mic-in port, but apple just hasn't enabled this feature. If you load windows on the MBP you'll realize that you can use a microphone in this port, as well as a line-in. It auto-detects what type of signal it is.

It's sad that apple hasn't enabled this for OSX...
