Wow...this really sucks. Although I thought many of his recent books had gone downhill in quality, he's still one of my favorite authors.

And since no one mentioned it, I'm going to plug The Great Train Robbery. It'ss a real departure from his usual high-tech stuff, but I think it's one of his best books (and a great movie with Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland). It's a great Victorian heist story with a bit of Ocean's Eleven flavor.

Oh, and I don't care what anyone else says, I thought the ending to The Terminal Man was perfect.

That book had such a preposterous and unbelievable plot that you'd laugh and toss it out, except for two reasons:

1. It was wonderfully engrossing.

2. It was a true story. I still shake my head about it.

Very sad.... Loved pretty much all the books I read by him. Now some of the movies on the other hand, didn't care to much, but that is for another thread or forum.

I didn't know he was fighting cancer either. He will be missed.

Definitely a shame, he was my favorite author. Great Train Robbery was one of my favorites.

James Fallows over at The Atlantic has written a tribute:

I loved hearing from him about oddball "practical" matters. For instance, height: he appeared to be nearly 7 feet tall, and explained to me (6'2") that up until 6'6" height was an advantage, but after that it was a big inconvenience -- door frames, beds, airplane seats. Or, getting ready for book writing bursts: He said he removed complications from his life while writing by having exactly the same food at every meal, so he never had to waste time deciding what to eat. He was a tech enthusiast, and the most passionate Mac advocate I have encountered.

*sadface* The world lost a great storyteller when he die. My favorite book/movie is Eaters of the Dead or The 13 Warrior (same thing, different name) and Jurassic Park.

Wow. I didn't even hear about this until I read this post and I am normally pretty up to date on all news.

Sad news. Michael made a lot of great contributions.
