Microphone won't work

My built in mic won't work. I was told that this may be due to the fact that I accidentally plugged my external speakers into the mic jack. Anyone know how to fix this?

From another Newbee. I would check settings. If it's a 2012 Imac there are two Mics built in to the cabinet. Plugging speakers into a mic jack shouldn't do anything at all to a micrphone. Maybe not enought info here.

System Preferences... Be sure the Sound Input Preference is set to Built In, and volume control is turned up...
