Yes we know this but the key thing about using a SIM in iPad itself is convenience. It's as if the iPad says "out of range of your usual wifi? I'll use cellular instead". No need to switch on tethering on the iPhone. No need to tell the iPad to connect to it. Just open the smart cover and you're online instantly no matter where you are. This is the essence of the iPad. No fuss. No messing about. That king of thing is for android users :)

(Incidentally tethering in the iPhone has been a bit flaky for me; I sometimes have to switch it in and off several times before it appears in the list of available connections on my iPad or laptop. This is either a feature or a bug introduced with ios 5 because I worked like a charm before.)

I agree with you in part. I used to tether to my iPhone and it was a tiny bit of hassle having to click settings>Bluetooth>iPhone when I was out of wifi but the problem I have with the 3G iPad is the data tariffs.

Most of them are around £10 a month for 1gb! I'd tear through that in a day some days. There is the exception of the Three £15 for 10gb but I get 15gb for £15 with this MiFi thing. And as the fella said he gets unlimited with his tethering which I believe is only £25 a month. Until they put the iPad tariffs on an even keel with the other data tariffs I'll be buying wifi only iPads.

As a slight side note I also feel the black panel on the back of then 3G iPad makes it look a bit Un-Apple. :)

I'm with giffgaff right now, if you don't use much data £5 for 500mb is ok, like others have said though there pretty rubbish speeds.

I'm going for this next time.

Make sure you get a microsim!

Have you actually read any of this thread?

Yes. what's your point?

Well, you dismiss cellular data as expensive (saying it's £10 per GB) yet this thread is about how cheap cellular data can be—about £3/4 per GB if you shop around, and several people have provided links showing this.

Then you quote high retail prices for Three SIMs when this whole thread is about pointing out how cheap you can find Three SIMs for.

Yes aware of this. But I was pointing out that you had dismissed £25 for unlimited access - I gave reasoning as to why people should consider this. I also pointed out a different deal for £1.10 per GB.

Fine if you want to order from eBay all the time and swap sim cards around all the time (if I remember this is the person who's too lazy to turn bluetooth on as "it's the sort of thing Android users do") then £3/4 per GB is certainly better than £10 per GB but still not as good as £1.10 a GB with no SIM swapping, which is why I pointed it out.

I use 3uk rolling contract sims on both of our business iPads. 1Gb of data is £7 a month and can be cancelled at anytime. The sims are available from Three stores, I can't fault their coverage.

I bought the Three prepaid microsim off a vendor on Amazon. 3gb/90 days for about £12. You could buy the regular one for about £11 and cut it - which I did with my iPhone's sim - but guessed if I messed this up three would be unlikely to replace it.

Anyway, I'm very unhappy with Three having upped my phone contract by 52p or something but these prepaid sims off Amazin are fantastic for the occasions I need 3G data. As loathed as I am to recommend them I say go for Three and even better if you don't buy it directly from them!

I'm in Edinburgh and have found Three's 3G signal fantastic. Far more reliable than O2 in my experience.

Buy one of these fella:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MICRO-SIM-CARD-CUTTER-2-ADAPTER-iPHONE-4-4G-iPAD-/251084529243

It cuts perfect every time and it'll save you money in the long run. Also I use mine when I go abroad for cutting down local sim cards for Internet access, in short very handy.

Don't know if I'm just unlucky but my All you can eat data sim got blocked a couple weeks ago by 3 saying that I can't use my SIM in an iPad. Thing is I hardly ever use it (maybe once every week at most) as I usually have WIFI.

I'd considered one but, without doing any research, thought they'd be about a fiver so just went and bought micro sims. For a little over £2 that's pretty awesome actually! Thanks for this!

If its not too late op

Get the tmobile microsim for iPhone

Top up £10 and get 12 months free Internet, 500mb FUP monthly but they don't throttle or cut you off for browsing and email, that's unlimited.

Just activate the sim in an iPhone to start.

I'm finding tmobile pretty good. 3G pretty much everywhere as they piggy back orange.
