Microsoft is quite good at making software? Really?

Please cite your proof with references.

Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Phone 8, Office, Azure are all infinitely better than their Apple counterparts. Windows 10 runs better on a new Mac than the latest version of Mac OS does.

Best guess at a "system wide" Cortana button might be having it as the top-most widget in the Today View...

I don't think MSFT intends this app as a Siri competitor. IMO it's more an advertisement aimed at the iOS user base for the new ecosystem they're setting up under W10. Nadella is putting the pieces into place strategically and while the brain trust at Apple is busy designing picnic tables, his guys are working on real tools for enterprise customers and developers.

I like how he asked for proof and your answer is "because!" ;)

Not that there is any way to objectively prove it, but still. "Infinitely" is ridiculous.

Siri is terrible so this is good news but because apple won't let it be implement thoughout iOS like Siri is, and just relegating it to an app, it's useless

I really like how Microsoft are open to integration with other devices and not just their own OS.

If you are not aware of the software Microsoft does well, problems with you bud. Do your own research, cause your comment comes across as someone very uninformed. Yes Microsoft does some software very well, though you are not really interested are you? I'm sure in your world, all Microsoft software if crap..... Every two OS versions, Microsoft gets it very right ;)

This is good and I'm glad to see it happening but unless you can make cortana replace Siri as the default AI in iOS I don't see this ever becoming too popular for iOS users.

"Hey Siri, launch Cortana"

.... and then proceed with your queries using Cortana.

See? Siri can still be useful!

On a serious note, I've used Siri many times and she's usually pretty good at answering my queries. A quiet room and a clear speaking voice are needed, as well as a decent internet connection.

I think Siri on the wrist really brings it home, although I don't have the luxury of trying that method yet.

So, the surname of half my family is Call. Siri can't seem to handle that.

Me: Text James Call "I'll be home at 5"
Siri: Who would you like me to call?

I really really really hate Siri, I find she never can understand what I want and always gives me terrible results for navigation requests.

I really like how Microsoft are open to integration with other devices and not just their own OS.

They now have unmatched capability in virtualization technologies, much of it purchased right out from under Apple's nose years ago. These technologies are going to change the development landscape and blindside a lot of "smart" tech CEOs.

New NOT-Balmer Microsoft seems like 10x better company.

I really hope they pull this off with Win10 and a better supported phone OS.

Apple is the giant these days and we need a new hungry underdog with some fresh ideas and some good alternative products.

I would much like to have a Nokia-built phone.
The build quality are usually awesome, but Symbian, Meego and the older versions of Win Mobile have all sucked. Let´s hope MS fix this :)

Didn't see this coming! This should be great, Cortana is by far the best unique feature on their phones. Very happy. I hope we can disable Siri and use Cortana instead.

Microsoft is acting really smart these days. The Microsoft under Ballmer was far too arrogant and closed-minded to survive in this world. It was like a schoolyard bully with no friends. The new Microsoft is stepping up their game on so many fronts that I think that Apple best be careful.

Features like Siri for Mac are long overdue. Apple was a leader with speech recognition built into a computer operating system, but they let that wither and die on the vine, only to resurrect it over on their mobile platform, and let the Mac go stagnant. I suppose they are concerned so much about the user experience and load on their data centres to have unleashed Siri for 25+ million additional end points of commands.

To all these people stating "Siri is terrible"... the only thing terrible is the degree of exaggeration on MacRumors. Siri is more than adequate, if you know it's limits and quirks.

If someone thinks Microsoft is terrible at software, I'd love to see what they think of Apple's software development, which has gotten worse and worse over time.

Windows 10 looks pretty great. C#/.NET is great, Office is great, etc.

And Microsoft has recently been displaying the sort of passion from team members that Apple used to show in their products, rather than the now almost sterile, and very campy obligatory Jony Ive product demo video.

It's almost bizarre to me. I don't get it - the two companies seem to have somehow ended up swapping roles.

Not only is Microsoft good at software, but they also seem to have gotten steadily better at their hardware efforts as well, while Apple seems to be coasting as of late (though Apple hardware is still better than their competitors IMO).

Can you say "Message to James Call"... would that make a difference?

While "terrible" might be an exaggeration, calling Siri "adequate" is as well, in my opinion. Adequate is not requiring an internet connection to do all tasks, like playing a song that's stored on my phone. Or timing out a request multiple times despite being on LTE.

Siri is great when it works, but I think it's unnecessarily restricted. Just giving us offline Siri access would be a huge improvement in itself.
