Microsoft should spin off Xbox and focus on enterprise and cloud. Their structure now is a mixture of horizontal and vertical. I don't see how getting in to hardware with tablets (and possibly phones) makes sense. Microsoft is a software company. That is what they should be focused on.

But the problem is Microsoft is no longer a software company. It's now 'officially' a Devices and Services company, and has just kicked off total restructuring to align itself to this. I'm not saying it couldn't go back in theory, but even with Ballmer gone that's going to be a 180 too far for even MS.

Biggest problem with him is how he acts like a forum troll in real life.. If you've ever heard his opinion about the Iphone months before it came out you know what I'm on about

The stock market reacted positively to the news, with Microsoft's share price opening 8% higher than the previous day's closing.

The shareholders must be jumping for joy. How this clown held onto his job for so long I'll never know.

Lets hope it brings some fresh blood into the game that can push competition and innovation, as there is bugger all outside of phones right now.

They should hire Steve Forstall! I'd probably switch from Apple to Microsoft within 6 months after that happens! LOL

Completely agree. All he cared about was the price tag, and kept bashing on about how Windows CE was superior. What a douche.

If you're going to try to make a poor joke to provoke a reaction, at least get the guys name right

I can't believe in all his years managing Microsoft he didn't change the photos icon to the one on the right.

:D :D the one on the right is so so so much better I hope apple grabs him and puts him in charge of their design team. Please apple don't screw this up

Whoever came up with that idea was an idiot. They're way to late to the party to ape the Apple model. Focus on what they do best - enterprise and cloud.

It's really sad that they're up 8% today on this news. The fact that they're up so much means that a lot of people think that the next CEO will do better.

Normally when the stock market reacts to CEO changes, they react when a new CEO is named, because they can compare the old CEO vs the new CEO and decide which is better.

Microsoft hasn't named a new CEO though, meaning most people thought he was so bad that the stock market thinks that Microsoft could pick literally anyone to be CEO and they would probably do better than Ballmer did.

I'm not saying I wouldn't make the same choice if I had money to invest instead of debt to pay off. I'm just saying that I would feel like rubbish if I were Ballmer. Although I guess the stock market is an expectations game - he can feel vindicated if the new CEO does worse than him.

It's for sure good for MS that they will split up; sooner better then later. But it also true he is a unique character ... And a bit entertaining too.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see the split stuff up soon. They have their eggs in too many baskets and none of them individually stand out as massively successful (profit wise).

I'd expect that we'll see whats already been predicted this year:

- Sell of Bing
- Sell of Xbox / Media division (probably not for another year though)
- Tighten up the OS Division and merge them with Skype, Office and other services (basically to create an integrated ecosystem like Apple has)
- Either ditch surface or spin it off to create a completely new OS just for tablets and phones

Also don't forget that MS own a LOT of IP on specialist hands free tech and spend huge amounts on researching it. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see some new 'nextgen' wearable products using that tech.

I'm actually quite excited. Change has to happen for them, and Ballmer was the one holding it back. The company needs a real restructure to make things happen for them.

I found a Steve Forstall on the Internet who seems to build surf boards; maybe he think that's what MS needs to rediscover its former glories?

:D haha "Introducing the new Microsoft Surf-ace"

Can't believe I'm reading this:eek::eek::eek::eek:! I don't really like MS for what they did in the past, but I have to admit, they need to go on. Good thing Balmer realized he couldn't lead the company any further.

I'd just like to know who'll be crazy enough to be his replacement and try to manage MS out of the mess they rushed into - Windows 8 and Surface mainly, they do need to come up with some big changes for the best, and soon.

So glad he is soon gone. It's hard to believe how so many really smart, educated people at Microsoft can produce so many ef-ups per year.

Not only has MSFT done a great job at screwing up Windows, an excellent OS, they have managed to release virtually everything at 80% finished. Management there apparently does not understand the concept of getting it very close the right the first time.

Goodbye Metroboy.
