No truer words

"I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots."
Albert Einstein

Google translate website combined with Dragon Dictation and a text to speak program would basically do this. Impressive to do this fast. And nice to combine it. But this basically exists or should exist.

I wonder what people will pay for this? Is it good enough to conduct business? Otherwise how many family members and friends do you have that you don't share a common language with? Probably some children of immigrants will now be able to talk more easily with their Grandparents. That is certainly a noble improvement.

Otherwise, while traveling you need your phone to do the translation real time. And without using a huge amount of cell data.

Nadella Stare

Nadella's eyes are staring into my soul… :(

Nadella is thinking "I'm the captain now Mr. Ballmer."

Also, he is attempting to do the Steve Jobs hypnotic stare down mind control reality distortion bubble trance inducing glare…

Steve was the master at this Jedi Master trick… give it up, dude.

Wwdc 2014...

The pendulum swings. Microsoft has done more progressive soul searching and innovation in the last 6 months than Apple has in the last 6 years.

It was NOT a coincidence that this event occurred just before Apple WWDC on June 2 2014…

Hold onto your seats to se what the future REALLY will be.
MS Dead Decade cannot be erased in 6 months… Clue: Get one.

And Google will be doing this very soon because they already have the translation tech built into their neural net.

Apple kinda feels boring next to this stuff, I must admit.

You sound like a Windows fan. Don't you know that Windows 8 just got released? Why the rush?

Maybe its exactly because of that.... Windows 8 was released.. cant stand it. Waiting for 9.

----------

Leave it to Kara Swisher to make the cringe-worthy anti-German joke.

Kara swisher, the bane of tech interviews!

Cortana is Siri's ugly wannabe sister.

So...basically they're going to secretly record our conversations to help "improve" this translation service?

Edit: Reminds me of IBM's Watson, combining this translation tech with Cortana and Watson would be pretty crazy.

Majority of articles, interviews & videos CANNOT talk about Ms. Cortana without mentioning Apple Siri to either explain what it is or how it works.

Epic Fail. Too little. Too late.

Only MS Xbox Halo geeks know who Cortana is… The World knows who Siri is. Standing in Siri's shadow is a cold dark place to be.

Unfortunately, and like it of not, this is another point which is starting to make Apple look boring to many.

1: We have Samsung bringing out a wide range of varied and different products, as well as their other tech consumer goods.

2: We have microsoft making their hardware, (getting better all the time) and their BIG interesting projects like this, and the many concepts and things that make them seem like they are an interesting company working on BIG things.

3: We have Google working on all manner of devices, driverless cars, the air balloon internet, the google glass and a whole host of items.

What does Apple look like it's doing?
Well probably a slightly thinner iPad with a new button
probably a new iphone with a screen size the same as everyone else (finally)
perhaps upgrade the CPU in their imacs
and perhaps they may have an iwatch.

It's now exactly WOW out there change the world, grand new ideas coming from Apple these days, just tweeking things to keep their money flowing. Oh and build some new shops and a round office building for themselves.

Considering Cortana is built into Windows Mobile 8.1 I don't think it's limited to Halo geeks... I never played Halo and I know about the feature.

Paranoid much.

Personally, no lol I could care less if they listen to my random conversations. I was just pointing out that it could be a privacy concern for some people. The software does essentially transcribe everything you say in order to translate it so there's bound to be a log of it somewhere in the cloud. It wouldn't be a completely secure option if say government officials from different countries wanted to communicate that way without a live translator.

Thanks for the link. But it does seem no one can undeniably say he did or didn't. I wonder what Einstein would say about the current state of human interaction and the future. But wherever it originated from, it still fits.

And the post by 'bawbac' could be where the futures heading. Can't wait to get out of here and live in the woods.

Left field question: what would happen if the world was hit by an EMP?

Waste of time. Windows 9 should have been in public beta by now.

Right... Because the machine translation team inside MS has EXACTLY the same skills as the UI team, the frameworks team, and the core OS team. Programming's one of those things where you can slap any random person into the job and expect them to do it just fine, isn't it?

I live in another country so a way to automatically translate would be AWESOME

But leave it to Microsoft to put it in the most flashy and useless application ever. Let's try to automatically translate text before we start with audio. Half the time SIRI doesn't even recognize my English (and it's so slow I've given up on it completely). Google Now language recognition is way better but Google translate it utter garbage for almost all things one would encounter in one's daily life. Adding the two together, even if MSFT research has actually improved on them, can only result in hilarity and something that nobody in their right mind uses, ever. If you're talking to another person and it's gibberish - you'll stop.

German English is a bad example too as for one the languages are pretty similar so it doesn't mean much, and secondly most Germans speak English and will be better at translating than the translator software.

Language research is cool. The product is not.

Time for a translation party!

Check out the state of the art in translation here:

PS: Now, honestly, when I first tried this 5 years or so ago, the results were MUCH worse. So this is improving!

Microsoft finally exiting the Dinosaur era

Title Should read: "Microsoft finally exiting the Dinosaur era." If they have money to blow, toss it into my account! I can think of better things to do with the money they blow. So much #FAIL!

Don't ditch your flashcards and grammar book just yet...

I have no doubt that machine translation will transform our lives for the better, but here’re some reflections on why it’s still important to encourage the learning of other languages—analogous to why all of us still should learn math even though computers kicks our butt at counting…here is the full scoop: http://asiasociety.org/blog/asia/mi...-translator-dont-ditch-your-vocab-flash-cards
