Meh, ive been on QuickOffice Pro, since iPad1, and on iPad 2 and iPhone 4, and synced to Dropbox in the cloud.....way before Docs on iCloud, and way before any purported Office on iPad.

MS has been creating Office for Apple platforms for 30 years. Technically, Office was on the Mac before it was on Windows.

So I'm not sure why its at all shocking or "proof that MS is admitting defeat". As others have said, MS is a software company and they'd be foolish to ignore 130+ million iPad users.

Seriously, why did they abandon iWork, except for minor updates? Very annoying. Anyway, off topic.

We'll see a release that will integrate iCloud's Documents in the Cloud feature, as seen in the ML dev preview.

Intending? M$ has had Win on tablet style laptops for 20 years. If they can make $10 per app on iOS, they'd make more money in the first year of iOS-Office than they did on Windows (tablet) in history.

Win8 is also for computers. Office will still be purchased on computers. M$ will still make money.

You guys really need some classes or something. You even said "wildly popular". Really?!

Competitor's deeply entrenched wildly popular platform. As in the iPad. READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS FTW.

Yes. They'll make money whatever way they go. And yes. Windows 8 is also for computers. But Office is what most people would call a Killer App. And launching it alongside a new platform (this being Windows 8 on Arm) could help bolster sales.

But what if they go ahead and release it on the iPad now? Once again, yeah. They'll make money. Probably tons. And loads of people waiting to see what MS's answer to enterprise on tablets will probably use it as an excuse to go ahead and pick up an iPad for everyone at the office.

...and it'll be done at the potential expense of Microsoft's own future tablet platform. Why would people want to get Windows 8 over an iPad? Apple has the apps. They've been out for a couple of years now. There's no initial draw to it.

So will they eventually release Office for the iPad? I'd say so, yeah. There are tons of people out there who have iPads now, and probably aren't willing to upgrade within the next year or so. It's a market they'll want to tap at some point. But will they do it before they release WOA? I seriously doubt it.

Also...M$? Really? People still do that? Now that Apple's huge and making tons of money, do we start calling them A££le? No. That'd be dumb.

Microsoft:

You will "directly" (not through OEMs) receive money from me for the first time if you release Office for the iPad.

Please do it. :D

Is that the case with ipad 2 too? I thought the problem was my iPad 1 with its low ram and slow processor. My requirents aren't too high though. It just can't handle more than 20-25 pages (with about 200 data entries and couple of formulas for each entry) on my iPad whereas I need about 31 pages max (one per day). Was hoping iPad 3 will fix it for me. Right now I have to create two spreadsheets a month which is kind of a pita if I have to make a correction in the first spreadsheet. If the faster iPad doesn't help improve this, I might have to reconsider my iPad 3 purchase instead of a new MacBook.

email the pdf to yourself (gmail)..go to apple store, try it out
i have a feeling its not worth it though? you can get a refurb mac air for around the price of a 64gb iPad and that will be loads more useful.

In regard to update no. 4, perhaps it's some advancement of Office Web Apps?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

MS ARE working on ipad app. There is no question in that. I've heard rumors that MS are plannig to launch ipad Office later this year (september and so on timeframe) along with Win8 and new desctop office. New office will feature new 'metro' interface, but main frature will be compatibility- in will run on new win, win for tablets, mac, ipad and perhaps on android.
Main question - how good will it be.

For Your Information

You can have a fully featured Microsoft Office 2010 on your iPad right now. There are some server-based cloud-hosted on-demand services. I tried them both (although I don't need it, purely technic interest) and they work pretty well (except the Windows games in OnLive). There are privacy concerns, though. You need a working internet connection and working servers of the services (both located in Palo Alto btw).

CloudOn. You need an US iTunes account and a registration with CloudOn and Dropbox. You have to tell CloudOn your Dropbox password.

I recommend Keynote, Numbers and Pages by Apple. According to MacWorld “…support editing and saving documents in Microsoft’s established formats.”

It's both pathetic and childish they (MS) feel the need to be so petty and pedantic..."oh no, that's not real, you're misinformed and the photo's a fake".

It's hardly classified secret squirrel commercially-sensitive news that they might be launching an Office for iPad product sometime soon (they'd be stupid if they didn't) or that a demo UI is just that, so what's the big effing deal?

Oh, the irony. considering Apple's almost paranoid laughable secrecy on what's coming, even when the evidence for a new product is obvious.

With the iPad 3 coming soon, my bet is that Microsoft will be at the unveiling March 7th. The next focus will surely be productivity.

The tables will have certainly turned, though, since Steve Jobs had to "grovel" for Bill Gates' $50 million. With PC sales down and the future in tablets, Microsoft will need the iPad. The circle is now complete.

I hadn't considered what seems obvious to me now - the MS rep said all will be clear in a couple of weeks, the iPad 3 will be unveiled in a couple of weeks. Hmmm, I completely missed that :)

Hmm...

Microsoft are probably using an iPad to test features for a different release, so they know how it should work! :p

WHO gives a damn LOL, it's from Microsoft! They probably just took a year to copy Apple's iWork suite for the iPad and still did a hideous job out of it. Anyone seen the UI of the latest iteration of Office for Mac?

Yes, I have seen it. And actually worked with it, too. It's awesome and extremely intuitive. Don't bash on something you (presumably) haven't used. It makes you look a bit smug. And ignorant too, frankly. If you have used it yourself and don't like it, that's another story. That's fine then. But even if that's the case, please don't assume everybody here on MacRumors shares your opinion only because "LOL, it's from Microsoft!".

As soon as their bloatware fails they will bring it out. :D Windows 8 for the non MS people ;)

Really its actually easy, but its true it does not go as far as Excel does.

Still not that hard and I use both the mac and iPad version. iCloud made me leave MS. :D

But how, the reason iWork works on iPad is because of its simplicity, MS is not know for clean simple design they are know for bloatware for them to serious do it they would have to do things differently now imagine how the MS fan club would have a histrionic episode if they did this.

I guess you missed the part about ipad adoption in the business world and how the business world uses office.

I don't share my opinion because I want your (or other people's) approval. I do it because this is a free forum in a free country.

Let's be frank with you too: I don't like anything from Microsoft. I used Windows for 12 years before discovering Macs. All that MS is good at is shamelessly ripping Apple off — from dashboard widgets to retail stores — that's more fact than opinion.

love Outlook on my macbook.. its a sweet program..
The whole office suite is great.. I dont see what the ahem fanboys are crying about... works great here.

It is possible MS is doing preliminary development and testing of a version of office for tablet - on an iPad - even though final release will be only for Windows 8 / WOA tablets. Far-fetched but possible.

Just speculating but...

Maybe someone mentioned this already and I missed it. Most likely its a cloud version of office thats web based. They already have Office365 so perhaps they're making it more tablet friendly and making it work on more tablets with more of the office suite? It would make the most sense.

Having an opinion is good. Even if it isn't shared by other people. But stating one's opinion as fact isn't good. There's a big difference between using the words "I think" and "is". And also between well-founded arguments and misplaced sarcasm, for that matter. I can have respect for an opinion if it's presented as such. Compare this: "Have you seen the new Office for Mac interface? In my opinion, it's hideous and looks very inefficient to me." with this: "Microsoft's new Office for Mac interface is god-awful! But hey, it's from Microsoft, so who cares? LOL!".

Now look at your posts and see which camp you're in. I have a hard time mustering any respect for opinions presented the way you do.

Menopause is well on his/her ...

but seriously, a lot of software that comes out of MS is good software. Including Windows.
