With the latest Edge update, it seems as though an admin name/password is required to access saved passwords in Edge. Once you put in the admin password it seems to work until you quit Edge. Then you need the admin password again.

Users are logged into Edge with their Microsoft365 accounts.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Isn't it using Keychain? Therefore needs your Mac user credentials to open the keychain - not necessarily an 'admin' password.

Were you using a Custom Primary Password before (your own "master" password)? Microsoft phased that out and switched those users to use device-based authentication instead (your Mac user password or Touch ID). If you weren't using this before, then your settings must have gotten changed accidentally.

In either case, you can go into your settings within Edge and change it to not require the device sign-in.

LIterally jumped on here to reply to this since i manage enterprise Macs and a user brought this to my attention today.

A weird wrinkle: If you have two separate user accounts on the same machine - the second one behaves as you'd expect and only requires the logged-in user's keychain password. The first user to register has the admin password problem. I tested this both ways with different timing on the account registered first.

Am following up on the above - I was just experiencing what the OP was with requiring the admin once (or twice, in my case) initially and then everything after works with the user's password up until Edge is quit or the device restarted.

Feels like an MS ticket waiting to happen.

It's not happening to EVERY user yet here, and it's not even happening to a user that uses multiple machines.

The symptom we have is that trying to see passwords prompts for either the admin password or the user password (usually both, usually a couple of times) Once it's entered it seems to stick until the app is quit.

Oddly enough, another user in the same company reported a similar issue now with Google Chrome.

I don't think the user had a password set initially. Toggling that on and off did NOT help. Note that this is only impacting one of 2 machines that the customer logs into with their M365 account at this point.

I have been following this thread closely since we too are experiencing this behaviour with Edge on MacOS Intune registered devices.

  • We don't use ABM
  • Our test Mac is registered via PSSO
  • Client devices are not PSSO - just registered via Company Portal
  • Both the test and client device user accounts are standard users (no admin access)

This morning Edge updated to version 150.0.4078.99. After the app restarted, viewing passwords is back to only asking for logged on user creds.

This thread seems to be the only current active acknowledgement of this 'bug'.
