I'm unable to install this update for some reason. I have OS X 10.6.7, but I must have missed the MS Office 14.1.1 update. But it seems rather silly that Microsoft might require you to have the most recent previous update in order to get this one. Is that the case? Or am I missing something?

I'm getting the exact same error. Did you figure it out? Or does anyone have any ideas?

Hey Slrandall and anyone else having the "there is no version of Office installed" error message--

I jumped on the irc channel and my good fellow DrKoobcamUK helped me out...(thanks to him)

I had forgotten that I had renamed the Microsoft Office 2011 folder to MS Office to avoid the ... trundication. As a result, office was looking for the exact file name to install the update on top of instead of knowing it's own files. Argh.

Anyways, he sent me a screen shot and helped me set my folder straight and the update was done in an orderly fashion after that.

I hope that helps.
Now back to my old folder name ;)
I'll just make myself a note to fix it if/when I need to update again.

Funny, while that seems really annoying as an error, it actually fits in well with how Apple does things, or at least did until recently - I remember people not getting Software Updates because they had put things in folders inside the Applications folder. Even now things downloaded from the Mac AppStore require authentication to move from /Applications!

I guess in Lion things will be different again, when there are folders and then there are folders (launchpad) - at least I'm assuming they'll be separate entities. But furthering my comment above, I guess there will be a use for a 27" screen in launchpad :).

Ah.. Software which is only 3 years old will not install on Lion. Pretty poor, really, considering that all they have to do is make a universal installer.
But then again, Microsoft will probably want people to buy 2011.

Aha, so now it's Microsoft's fault that Apple breaks the backwards compatibility with their "new" OS release. Fabulous logic, really.

Maybe we should also ask Apple to write installers for old versions of their Pro software; and while we're at it, Apple could also ship universal binaries for their old PowerPC-only software to make them compatible with Intel Macs - free of charge, of course. After all, there shouldn't be a reason for anyone to buy software upgrades.

The simple truth is that Apple had no reason to drop Rosetta support.

The only thing I'm missing is dashboard, and Panther takes 1/2 as much RAM.

I never use Dashboard - I disable it via Onyx on all my macs. However all my PPC macs are on Leopard. Why? Time machine. That's the sole biggest gain from Leopard. A reliable, automatic, hourly, backup is priceless.

Maybe you have some other backup system for your G4 mini. If not, and you have personal content on there, considering the age of the HDDs in there, you're playing with fire.

I'd love it if they would fix that damn problem with copy and paste in Word 2011. I don't know how many times Word has crashed on me after attempting the most rudimentary copy and paste. I updated this morning and a document I've been working on for over an hour just crashed after I copied and tried to past three (3) words from one paragraph to another...Urggggggggggggh

So you copied and pasted without first saving your work even though you knew Word had copy and paste problems?

What can I say?

I wonder why Microsoft office for Mac is still so popular when alternatives like open office are available.

The answer is simple. MS Office is used in a vast majority of medium to large businesses so anyone who works at or with these businesses needs 100% MS Office compatibility.

Epic fail...

Maybe I didn't read the documentation properly when installing, but the update has deleted all my contacts from address book and therefore my iPhone, iPad and MBA. Seems like I'm not the only one having the problem too...

Just updated yesterday and now all of my formula's won't calculate correctly.

I have 3 columns and 10 rows. Numbers in each row I do this formula: =A2+B2+C2 (then press enter) and I get a number (2+2+2=6) so 6 will be my # in Column 4 (where formula is). I then highlight that cell and drag down to cell 11 and 6 is my answer all the way down. The formula changes (a3+b3+c3, etc) but the number remains 6 instead of 6, 15, 7, etc etc.

Microsoft you suck with updates!

Same error here and I haven't changed the folder when I installed it. I've only had my MBP 2 weeks so am I missing something??

Anyone have any clue what's going on here? The other suggestion was that the install folder was renamed but that isn't the case with mine. Any help would be appreciated.

You're so wrong. *There is* a reason...
And a pretty good one... I mean, of course there is... I mean, you know that Lion is a new OS and... I mean, there's a really good reason for them to do so... I mean, look at it this way, they had no other choice because, you know... Lion is a new OS and... And there's a good reason... I mean... there must be... I mean...

...

...iOS doesn't have Rosetta, doesn't it? Ah, ah! I knew there was a reason... ;)

This'll be the first update for my G4 Mini running 10.3.9 in years. Leave it to MS to keep things nice n' tidy though!

edit: Wow, this is even adding new features. Looks like my mini can remain relevant if I ever need it as more than a jukebox.

1. Your HDD has not failed so you plod along with Panther. Right?

2. Upgrade to Leopard, at least, just for Spaces and Quick Look.

3. MS Office 2004 has been updated MANY times since you bought your Mini. Office2004-1150UpdateEN was in June 2008, a full update that didn't require a previous version. Same with 1155. Then Office2004-1160UpdateEN was HUGE at 192 MB last July.

Yeah I have had the same issue but whats interesting is that it happens only on my MBA and not on MBP.

I'm on a 2009 27" iMac. What's really frustrating is that there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the problem. My wife has the same 2009 27" iMac and a 13" MacBook and hasn't had any problems at all with either. Mine, on the other hand, only acts up every once in awhile - but when it does... There will be no problems with any documents for several weeks and then, all of a sudden, I'll be working on a document and it totally freaks out.

I'm wondering if I should uninstall and then reinstall the software. Maybe there was some sort of glitch that occurred during the original install...?

But then again, Microsoft will probably want people to buy 2011.

And why WOULD you NOT buy 2011?!

* Better Outlook
* Outlook PST import Support! (never been available before)
* Better Exchange Server support: better delegate permissions, better calendar supports (rooms), better Conversations view than Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 with Office 2010 (I know I use BOTH daily)!
* Better templates
* Outlook just works so much better than any iteration of Entourage EVER DID!
* RDP support - you cannot imagine how much I LOVE & USE this function daily at home to work!! (This essentially allowed me to kill VMWare Fusion and recover HDD space on my Al_uMB!!)

I don't know how many times I've requested that they fix a clipboard bug in Word that's been there since at least Word 2008 and, depressingly, is still in 2011. Still not fixed.

It results in text copied from Word pasting into InDesign as a PNG image of the text. So frustrating.

Wondering if you're running InDesign what settings are causing this issue if any? (PS: I don't use InDesign, but thinking another application taking text and creating a PNG image then there is a core setting being precendented in that other app = InDesign.)

You were not the only one... Various users went thru this issue. I was lucky that I was able to do a time machine restore.

Here is a link on the issue...

There are various message the Apple Support boards. We all thought it was a MobileMe/iCloud issue... It was due to this update & Sync Services.

Yep, did it to me too and I DO NOT use sync with Outlook, I turned it all off. SOB's. I am done with MS products on my Mac.

To anyone still having the same problem I did, if you simply re-install the original MS Office you bought and update it from there, it works fine. I must have done something that messed with the installer's way of detecting Office. Hope it works out for you!
