And you would recognize fanbots because you have been a member of this site, for oh, I don't know, maybe about 4 hours?

Funny that you've only been on this thread and the Palm thread.

More to the point, Apple created the infrastructure that made the success of the ipod possible, and yes, as a matter of fact, they bought some of the technology, and contracted the right people for some, but mainly, they figured out how to make an mp3 player that people liked.

Your Zune called. It wants a paint job in watermelon so it can be popular.

I've lurked here for years.

Yes, I own all MS products. You called me out. You're a sleuth you. What agency do you work for?

Apple bought, created, borderline infringed (or did) with the iPod, they ran the gamut. Nothing different than what almost every other company does. MS nor Apple are innovators. They take existing technology and improve upon it. But since this is an Appull site there are the usual Fanbot community members. They shined brightly in this thread.

Quick, let me return my Mac Pro and FCS2 before the MS'ers find me out....

I wonder if restaurants can store meat in it.

With my AAPL profit, I may consider buying the hideous table from MS to take a dump on.

Heh. You think it would recognize my *****?

not going to lie, looks fairly interesting. definitely has potential for places like kinkos, pubs, casinos and other business/ military. not sure if there's a big enough market for apple to pursue, but that's alright... although this does make me wonder why this is getting so much attention on macrumors...

edit- course i can't help but fantasize about a device like that only 2 inches thick running a version of 10.5-

After sleeping on it, I still really like the idea, but I still have some issues with it. I know people have been poo pooing the easily broken in a restaurant idea by saying that the top is just plastic with cameras beneath, but I think this isn't quite right. This coffee table model may be like this, but MS is saying that they want to make a flat screen version for restaurants. You know, so you can sit with you legs under it like you do at any restaurant nowadays. So, I think breaking in restaurants is an issue, although I'm sure they can think of something. Additionally, I still want someone to tell me how I'm going to power this thing in the middle of my living room. Do I really have to run an extension cord or cut a hole in my carpet? Does this not seem like a problem to anyone else?

Easy - you just take the battery out of your car and jam it underneath!:apple:

IIt would be an expensive gimmick without enough reason to exist, and with huge drawbacks--from arms getting tired to screens getting smudged. Smudges (and even scratches) are OK on a phone you use for short times.

I don't know about that...

For constant, traditional computing use? No way would I want or need touch screen... I have more control with a keyboard and mouse (albeit with the carpal tunnel syndrome they've caused me, and at age 18 at that).

But for a lot of special applications, a multi-touch display or laptop would KILL. I do music production, and the ability to run a "virtual mixing board" or control Logic/Vegas/ProTools via a touch screen would save me a LOT of time... to say nothing of using laptops in live music peformance.

I'm a drummer, and a lot of players are using laptops to run triggered loops or sequenced backing tracks to fill out a band's sound... sure, I can hook up a midi interface and use an external percussion trigger system to run a loop, but wouldn't it just be much easier to reach over and press a button on a screen? Yeah, I can edit tempo, volume, and processing in real time using a LOT of triggers and expensive percussion controlers... but wouldn't it just be easier to slide my finger across a virtual knob or fader? There's NO WAY I could comfortably use a keyboard or mouse in a live performance while playing drumset, keyboards, or hand percussion with my other limbs. But a multitouch MacBookPro screen? Yeah... I could dig that.

similar technologies

Everyone seems to be developing similar or related technologies. The only thing I'm a little confused about, is that MS seems to be touting this as a new technology that is their invention or innovation, and I don't see that.

In addition to perceptivepixel.com, and what Jeff Han has already done with this technology, and what Apple has demoed with multi-touch on the i-Phone, I've also already seen a tech demo from Sony, that's similar to what MS did with the glass tiles in their "Surface" demo. To view the video on YouTube, go to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQov4chYcKI

To me, this is still just another technology demo.. which is a repeat of the the other technology demos shown by Perceptive Pixel, Apple, and Sony.. The real "wow" will be when one of these companies actually introduces this technology in a commercial or consumer product that actually has some practical use or benefit. Apple will be the first with the i-Phone.. I'll be curious to see what else is introduced throughout the year.

Wait...you mean I have to wait until my date has finished eating before I can look at the dessert menu?

If you're that worried about your date spilling that much food as to cause you to order half the desert menu by accident, Ithink you need to find a new date.

I thought I'd seen these demos before:

WTH?!?

BSOD IMAGE

:)

Whatever. I've crashed and or frozen more times on my original MBP and the MBP that Apple replaced in the last year then in the 5 years on XP. I generally average once a month where I have to hold down the power button to turn it off. Last instance was about 3 weeks ago when I came back from sleep, realized I had left a share to my home server connected, hit the unmount button but it was before WIFI has reestablished its connection and instant beach ball that killed finder et al permanently. Couldn't even kill the task. Sorry but my appreciation for OS X and the Mac seems to be dwindling.

Again, please use instead of [img] and [-/timg] instead of [-/img] :) (without the -, I put them there as the post would not work otherwise)
Macrumors might consider adding this since most of us aren't web developers. My knowledge of tags consists in the fact that I know they exist.

WTH?!?

There's also a video of a much cruder prototype of the Surface device floating out there in the tubes somewhere...but I can't seem to locate it. It was about a year old, the same "domino" identifier technology and the multi-touch interface with photos/maps...the polished Surface videos don't look too different from that video that I saw a year ago.

the more I look at this the more I'm certain MS ripped off Perceptive Pixel for some concepts.
Here is a newer version of that youtube video

Perceptive Pixel Demo

Some though. The drag and drop into the camera is fracking brilliant though. Some similarities are one thing. This.... I don't know.

PS- Is it just me or is the above demo using piles?
