Hey all, wondering if somebody could help with this.

I bought Microsoft Office 2008 for mac with my MBP and has worked, up until recently; upon trying to sign in (whilst DEFINITELY connected to the internet) it tells me that "sign in to Microsoft Messenger failed because the service is not available or you may not be connected to the internet."

This is extremely frustrating and any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is likely that the ports used by Messenger are blocked.

I doubt it's the ports, because it's worked before.

However, I have exactly the same problem, and I think my problem might be because of a blocked port - I just changed routers. Anybody got any idea which ports I need to unblock? So far I've unblocked 80, 1863 and 6891-6900, because thats the ones I've read about, but none of that seems to work.

I'm using a Netgear DG834PN router, and Messenger for Mac 7.0.1

Thanks for the reply, it's just a really annoying problem.
For the time being i can use Adium (which I love) or I Love IM , it's just an inconvenience to be honest.

Oh God, this happened to me and I spent like 2 months using Mercury Messenger before I found a solution. SO annoying. Such an easy fix too.

Just quit MSN and go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete com.micrososoft.messenger.plist.

Then open it again and it'll guide you through the set up again.

Thank you!!
However, I tried this and it went through set up again just like you said but afterwards, i was met with the same error.

This is driving me insane!! Does anyone have any other ideas?

Did you quit MSN before you did it? If you don't it won't work right.

Otherwise, I don't know.:(

Did you install PeerGuardian by chance? This caused errors galore for me.
