This year, Apple left a wide open door with its pathetic lack of an upgrade to the ipod touch.
The capacity of the nano is also stuck at 16 gb.

The Zune HD looks ever more enticing now. While I don't think that anyone will overtake Apple, I would look for the Zune to be orders of magnitude more successful than predicted.

Because we all know the Zune HD has a camera.

I hope that the Zune HD does do very well. Competition if very very good, survival of the fittest. I would have LOVED if the Zune HD had a camera, mic, and GPS so that Apple would have been forced to include it in the next update instead of spreading it out, spoon feeding us one update at time.

i dont quite understand the frenzy about the camera.

Its a PMP, why does a PMP needs to have camera, GPS, etc?

at the same time, cheapest phone everywhere has camera and GPS.

there is a place for everything, after all.

The frustration from Touch users point of view is that more differentiation there is between the iPhone and the iPod Touch the potential there is for Applications on the App store that will be unavailable to us.

I honestly could care less about the camera but I would have loved to have the GPS and the compass. I didn't expect it to happen because there will always be some features that the iPhone has that the iPod touch doesn't. The iPhone does afterall cost roughly double what the iPod does. I think once you see AT&T's exclusivity end you'll gradually start to see the differences go away.

I don't need an in-car navigation device, but it'd be real nice to have a small development platform that would give me access to both a digital compass and a GPS. Now that they have opened up dock port to developers again I suspect you'll see people start to use iPods Touches and iPhones as the brain in robots.

In the iPod's case you've got a reasonable fast device, with input and output capabilities for debugging or interaction. The iPhone adds nearly anywhere communication (AT&T jokes aside) and currently GPS positioning and the ability to determine your heading with a compass. All of this for a mostly affordable base. It's a perfect baseline.

The developer license is moderately annoying, but that can be gotten around easy enough if you find it to be a problem.

I think MS is smiling because they finally got the zune right. The question is whether people will be willing to pay M$ a monthly fee for the right to listen to music.

The device itself looks gorgeous and appears to be well designed. They're really putting the full court press on this, because I think it will make or break their zune division.

Do I think apple screwed up in not updating the ipod touch witth some better features or gasp with some of the features of the zune? perhaps - I'd not call it a screw up as a misstep.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt in that the development pipelines are long enough so that this was probably already in late stages of planning when they got wind of what the new zune would be like

Also I've heard conflicting reports on the zune's processor - I'm not sure it will be as fast or faster then what the iTouch has

yes, I said iTouch

Ironic?

does anyone else find ironic that "the wait is over" but you can only "pre-order" the zune?

that would sort of indicate you'll be, um, waiting to have it delivered.

sort of like saying get your christmas presents now and wait til December 25...

hohoho.
