I just tried launching Excel and then Word after updating OS X a maintenance upgrade from 10.11.2 to 10.11.3 and neither Word nor Excel launch. Here is the crash report I get:

Check with the software developer to make sure Microsoft Excel works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X.

I checked Microsoft and I couldn't find anywhere it had an upper limit on the OS X version. I downloaded the Office 2011 latest update and that failed to function. Is Office 2011 dead for me? I use it about twice a year so I would feel annoyed to pay a monthly rental and ripped off at $149 for a single Mac for an upgrade.

did you update office 2011 to 14.6.0 ?

If not try the update - it should work fine after

Try update from within excel or outlook - help menu - check for updates

Thanks mikzn. I just found that update. Here is what I did. I couldn't download from the update menu of the programs because the Office programs wouldn't launch!

The first time I searched the Microsoft site for "office 2011 mac updates" the 14.5.8 was the newest version it showed and I tried that installation. It failed probably because it was the same version I had installed. Then I re-visited the site but this time in the search results I changed the listing toggle to list the 'most recent first' and found the 14.6.0 version. Downloaded and installed! It works!

Microsoft is good about supporting their old products. Apple deprecates old code when they update things which can be a headache for developers.

Good to hear you figured it out - there was a lot of updates to make outlook work with el capitan, I was surprised they did not tell everyone to upgrade to 2016 - but am glad they supported the users of 2011 - it works well on el cap

I may not update after El Capitan as I'll lose Aperture. I'm retired so money is tight and I really don't feel like paying monthly subscriptions. Last year I dropped cable TV. Last week I dropped my cable phone service so now all I have is over the air tv, a $20 monthly cell phone, and $60 cable internet. I'm fine with that.

I dropped cable a long time ago too - could not stand watching ( or avoiding ) the commercials! But I could not live with out netflix.

Why is yours so outdated? Update your office, or install the latest one.
