Luckily, I've never had Word - Word compatibility issue, even with moderately complex documents. But I have had PP and especially Excel issues. PP for Mac has crashed before when PP for Windows used advanced effects and Excel for Windows supports far more functions than Excel for Mac and also changes formatting.

What do you mean?

Just to clarify some more this is what I meant.

I've attached three screenshots. One is Pages with the UI I like. The next is Word with it's standard Ribbon in Print Layout view (the default). The next is the closest I could get Word to look like Pages using draft view, hiding the ribbon, and enabling the format bar.

I'm still not happy because I like to see how my document actually looks, but Word's Page Layout view isn't as nice as Pages'.

You are absolutely right. The UI in Pages is much better than the one in Word. Pages is very elegant, and the UI is cleaner, and that is perhaps the only thing I like about it. However, I don't think there is a way to make Word look like page. It may become better if you remove the ruler, though.

Word for Windows is far more elegant than the Mac version, if you want to try that...

I'm in a bad place. The ability to work from my iPad is key for me. I don't like the new Pages so I use Pages 09 on my desktop so I can't work very easily between them.

Office for iPad is really good so I've largely moved back to Office for OS X and iOS connectivity.

I love the Pages tight UI, I was wondering if there was a way to make Word look more like Pages. The closest think I can come up with is to (1) hide the ribbon, (2) show the format bar, (3) and move to draft view.

I gave up the iPad for productivity. I cannot be productive with it. The iPad is just bad for writing. Even if you have a keyboard, the environment does not let you to use a mouse, which is key for every writing environment we have today.

Actually, I've managed to do it quite nicely (but it's not for everyone). Since it's kind of off topic I'll just link to it below, but it's worked well for me with Office for iOS.

I have to agree with you, with word, but I found excel to be better then I expected on the iPad.

I haven't used Excel on the iPad yet. To be honest, I rarely use my iPad. I do have a 3rd gen iPad (the "new iPad", the first with the retina display) and it became really slow and laggy after installing iOS 7.

I've tried Word and it's not what I expected. It is fine and perhaps the best word processor for iPad. But I don't care. It doesn't have the features I need, and it's not good for real writing.

I guess PowerPoint is the kind of software that should work fine on the iPad, giving its nature.

Harbinger of things to come?

I was excited to see that Microsoft just updated OneNote for iOS to support handwriting. Excellent. I went over to the OSX App Store to see if they had added similar functionality to the OSX version.

There's an update to OneNote (in support of OCR) but it requires OSX 10.10.

That seems to be a pretty clear indication that MS Office for OSX is going to require OSX 10.10.

Looks like I won't need to renew my Office 365 subscription that is ending in March.

Well new features will require the latest version of an OS, for obvious reasons. Common sense really.

Not common sense. The latest version of an OS is only required if the software takes advantage of the features that are exclusive to that version.

The functionality that is lacking in the OSX version of Office do not depend upon the exclusive capabilities and functions of Yosemite.

You're assuming that, you do not know for sure. Or maybe something else in the update will not work on previous versions of OSX, only Yosemite.

I made a MacRumors poll here because I'm curious how many users will update to Yosemite just because of Office for Mac.

Now that OneNote only supports 10.10 I'm confident Office:2015 will too.

YOU are the one that made the assumption. You don't know for sure. So let's keep it real.

What you quoted from me is in response to this bit:

The functionality that is lacking in the OSX version of Office do not depend upon the exclusive capabilities and functions of Yosemite.

So I should have trimmed it down in my reply.

Plus my other point is still valid. Something in the update may be reliant on/only works on Yosemite.

You're on about keeping it real, then within the same paragraph you do the same thing that you're slating me for.... You are assuming too. You have no factual evidence for your claim, neither do I, as we don't work for MS or worked on coding the app. I'm just giving a counter point for those that don't have a bias towards bitching about Yosemite.....

I honestly think iPad is product going slowing to its natural death (latest results of the World tablets sales seem to confirm it.
Not been a truly a fan of it (a computer is always my choice, personal), but with the increasing size of the smartphone many of the things you can do with an iPad you can do as well with a phone right now.
I even read books on my 4.7'' screen, so I think you're choice is well shared around.
Let's see.

Heh, you're enjoying this thread aren't you. :)

I have only one question for anyone that might have any knowledge of Office:2015 ;)

I wonder if Excel 2015 supports all of Excel 2013 for Windows new functions/formulas. This is my biggest headache, there are some functions simply absent from Excel 2011.

If you get office for mac right now, do you know if they'll offer a discount to upgrade to the newest version if it comes out later in the year?

Office 365 for students at $80/4 years is an option, but still like the standalone version

They haven't announced anything, I can see Microsoft scrapping any sort of upgrade discount because they want to encourage people to be on Office 365.

Old news, but just realized that you can't upload to one drive directly from word.

One of the reasons I got office 365 was to convenience to use use it with an iPad. So clunky and annoying to have to upload to one drive separately

I don't understand why this could be an issue on a desktop computer. Just download the OneDrive client, and synchronize the data with your Mac.
Use Word and save to the synced folder. Where is the big difference?

Exactly what I was going to say. In fact, with OD client, opening the document from OD and just clicking save is as quick. I am making extensive use of OneDrive on all devices. Working just wonderful.

It's not much of a big deal...but I first used the share function which has an option to save to one drive. That wasn't working and if it isn't functional, I don't see why it's even listed as an option.

Granted I'm new to mac, but had too google it and see why it wasn't working. I did get the client, but that too wasn't syncing at first....had to re download it. Guess it's fine now, but the extra hoops to save a word document to use on my desktop was annoying. Should have just got a flash drive like the "old days."

Again not a big deal really....but you asked.
