Microsoft Office 2015 (2016?)

It appears to be only a big fix. No new features.

Eh? What are you talking about?

What's New in Version 15.1
•Print - Need to print your notes or a to-do list? Now you can with OneNote for Mac! You can also save your notes as a PDF.
•Drag and Drop - Drag pictures from websites or other places on your Mac and drop them directly into your notes.
•Formatted Text - We've added the ability to copy and paste formatted text between applications. Whether it's an article from the web or a document in Word, any content you paste into OneNote will look great!
•Format Painter - Use Format Painter to quickly copy the format of text in one part of your notes and apply it to other text.
•Hyperlinks - Now you can add links to your notes or edit existing ones.

Really? It does not appear to me. In my Mac App Store, version 15.0.2 is the latest one. It appears that version 15.1 has not yet been released to the Brazilian Mac App Store (which is the one I am linked to).

It didn't appear to me either, so I searched for the app on the store and then I clicked on Update..

Now it does. Finally updated. Still, a long way to go before feature parity is achieved.

I guess you were unable or unwilling to do a two-second Google search yourself, so here you go:

http://www.cnet.com/news/apple-to-restore-lost-features-for-iwork-power-users/
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6049?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

PS While we're on the subject: Do you have a credible source from within Apple stating the company "dumbed down iWorks simply to give it away for free"?
Oh, I DID do a google search.

The first link you posted says this:
"Following criticism from users, the company says it will add features like customized toolbars and shortcuts to updated versions of the free software over the next six months."
That makes it clear that adding back features were a result of user criticism NOT some predetermined plan.

Both links were published AFTER users complained.

From the same article of the first link:
"The company posted a notice on its site Wednesday that acknowledged the missing features, with a promise to incorporate them in upcoming releases over the next six months."

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to read what it says and conclude... that Apple's initial plan was to produce a dumbed-down iWork and make that available for free. In an attempt to defend Apple you provided additional evidence to support the claim. Of course plans change and Apple is responding to user feedback, but probably as long as there is negative feedback. I suspect that once people quiet down, the updates to iWork will stop.

And the question remains as to why they have not made the older, more feature rich version of iWork freely available as well.

That is probably because they want to move users away from the old version and discontinue it entirely. Probably nothing to do with taking features away from the users.

If they truly want to move users away from the old version then they need the new version to have the same feature set as the old one... and based on the articles that were linked, Apple originally had not plans on adding those features back in (they only decided to do that in response to user complaints).

So how were they expecting users of the old version to migrate to the new? (just a hypothetical question, none of us know the answer... but things don't add up)

The new Pages doesn't even have support for linked text boxes. I find that astonishing.

I honestly do not know.

I just gave up iWork a while ago. Four years without updates, and then comes this. I don't know why so many people stand behind iWork. Yes, it is easy to use and has a beautiful interface. But it seriously lacks features. Pages does not have cross-references and cannot even split footnotes in two different pages. Why praise such a feature-less suite? Perhaps Apple has some secret agreement with Microsoft prohibiting iWork to compete directly with Office. I just don't know.

All I know is that I am looking forward to the release of Microsoft Office 2014. I need it, as Apple won't deliver a worthy competitor.

It's been 40 days Microsoft released Office for the iPad and no signs of the new Office for Mac. Now Microsoft is planning an event on May 20, probably to unveil new smaller Surface tablets. So, all focus should now be on the forthcoming event, meaning that Microsoft will probably not unveil a new Office until the end of the month.

That makes me wonder, will Microsoft release a beta version of Office for Mac this time? Or will it just release Office for Mac, with no beta testing period, like it did with the iPad version?

I believe they promised some information about Office 2014 2nd qtr, so that's between April and June. I'd be a little more patient.

With that said, I'm using Office 2013 in vmware just because its that much better then what we have for the Mac :( My point even if Office 2014 comes out later this year it will be inferior to office 2013

Well, I don't know. I hope something comes out soon.

Perhaps they have streamlined the code when they ported Office to the iPad. Perhaps they took all this time making a better Office for Mac. Or perhaps they just relocated the guys to write Office for the iPad and those guys are hurrying up right now to deliver Office for Mac on a tight schedule. I just don't know.

What I know is that I tested OneNote for Mac and it looks really neat. It doesn't have all the features of the Windows version, but it looks good. Better than anything Office 2011 has to offer. Finally, Microsoft seems to have implemented the ribbon on the Mac.

So, if Office 2014 (or 2015) follows the same path as Office for the iPad or OneNote for Mac (and I think it will), then it could be really good. Perhaps the 2013 version for Windows is even better, but, depending on what comes, do you really care?

My main problems with Office 2011 for Mac are the clunky interface, the slow responses, the crashes, the occasional problems. It's not much functionality. Most features are there, and, if Microsoft implements a few more, then I am OK with it. What I really want is good piece of software. I want Office for Mac to replicate every feature of Office 2013 for Windows, but, if it doesn't, then I can do with a more streamlined set of apps.

There aren't that many Macs. ;)

Yes. The iPad has so much more potential... at least for free or US$ 1 apps...

Total Mac sales should amount to about 55-60 million (lifetime sales). I don't know how many are still in operation. But it should be a safe bet to say that Microsoft did not manage to sell one copy of Office to each two Macs ever sold.

Besides, downloads do not equal purchases. If Microsoft provided a free, read-only download of Office for OSX, I suspect that the download ratios would be similar.

Yes, it is true. We don't know how many paying Office customers are using the iPad.

any new news on office 2015?

No news so far. Well, Microsoft released Office 2011 14.4.2 yesterday, but this is just a very small update to fix issues with the previous version. We are still awaiting for Office 2014 (which may well be Office 2015 at this point) to be released.

I guess Microsoft is going to wait for sales of Surface Pro 3 to take off before releasing a new Office for the Mac. That would mean an announcement by mid-June.

Where did you get these numbers? Any source?

My source is this dude :)

It's from WWDC last year, i'm sure they'll give a figure on Monday, probably be approaching 80 million.

Oh OK... But is that the total number of Macs ever sold or still in operation?

Apple sells about 4-5 million Macs per quarter. However, these numbers have been increasing over the years, and five or ten years ago much less Macs were sold than today.

72 million Macs installed base means still in operation. Using your own figure, that means 16-20 million Macs are sold each year. Most people will upgrade to a new Mac every 3-4 years so that figure of 72 Million would be about right. With the way I see see macs leaving theApple Store in my neighborhood I would guess that this year Tim Cook will be showing that number to be close to if not over 100 Million.

I predict Microsoft releases a new Office version for Mac 2015 only because I like the new leadership of the company and they aren't making bonehead moves (yet). They need to be a software company again - sure make hardware products but don't neglect the software. Word for Windows is far better than Word for Mac. The longer they wait to release a new product the more people jump aboard the hate wagon for Office.

Personally I'm just about there, if a new Office doesn't arrive soon, I hope to never use it again. For those who say they "need" office.. you only really need 2011 for select files and select people. Many other programs are available nowadays. Whether or not you want to use those programs or want to be a stickler for Office is another discussion entirely.

Well, I guess 100 million is a little too much. If 72 million were the numbers last year, then this year it will hardly be 100 million, as Apple did not report sales of 28 million or more in the last year.
