Every now & then some site offers a deal on the buy once, use forever version of Microsoft Office,2024 Home & Business Mac (as opposed to the monthly subscription Office 365). Usually when I post about this, someone will ask how I got Office so inexpensively. Just wanted to mention that Groupon.com has it for $50 right now, with an additional $10 off using the code LOVE (assuming that is only good through Valentine's Day). This version will only get updates occassionally & I think only for things like virus protection & security updates. You don't get feature updates. BUT, it is the least expensive way I've found to stay current on Office.

Is it one of those licenses that'll tie your license to a motherboard, so if you'll buy a new computer you'll need a license?

I honestly don't know, but it might be. FWIW, it's through go2software.co

You get a Groupon redemption code that you then enter into go2software & they give you a license key that you type into their site. I saved the info so hopefully I can transfer my license over to a new computer when I get one (come on new MacBook, please be smaller & Lighter than the air). It looks like it should allow me to register it again, but I don't know for sure.

I will also say, that as of now, the new version does not show up in my Microsoft purchased apps history. My 2021 & prior version did, so not sure if it's because of the different vendor, or if it's just too recent to show up yet, but it might not be as seamless to transfer licenses.

Great deal and tempting however, Office 2021 for Mac does everything I need and still gets monthly-ish updates!
Yah, I generally have 2 computers & upgrade Office once every cycle (when I find a good deal) and then pass the older license along to my wife. I had 2021 on my computer & she had whatever came before that (2019, 2018 or 2016, not sure what the last version was). I just found out last week that her version could not read lookups, so that was another incentive to update, but agree, I don't really see any differences between 2021 & 2024. If you already have 2021, no sense in upgrading.

One final comment on this, I still can't verify that it doesn't somehow tie to your specific computer, but I got a follow-up email from support@2gosoftware.co (it went to junk mail & I didn't notice it until now) but it offered quick installation tips & the tip was to download the office apps from the Mac App Store & then open any app & Click Use Product Key & enter the license key they sent me, so I THINK that would mean that it's not tied to my specific laptop & I can take it to my next computer when I get it

If you transfer the license to another computer, and the license is valid on only one computer, you would need to do that transfer through Microsoft, using your Microsoft account information. That transfer will inactivate Office on the old Mac, allowing activation on your new Mac.
(Unless you purchase a license that allows you to install and use on more than one computer. And, Microsoft can verify that you have a multi-computer license, or only one at a time.)

Just a heads up that Groupon now has the Mac version for $20. I'm not sure if that is just for me or if it's available everywhere (I got some email from them saying I had 40% off my next Groupon deal) but it seems like it's for everyone.

This is for the lifetime version (not Office 365) of the app, and I was able to transfer it form my Air to my NEO. I know Ocffice is not for everyone, but figured I'd pass it along, as it's a really great deal for anyone looking to pick up a copy, but who doesn't want the monthly fee.

The lifetime version gets all the same updates -- while it is supported. I'm on Office 2021, and I'm still getting updates every week, for all the good they do me (and I'm not on the "preview" update channel).

Eventually, the support period expires, and you don't get any more updates.

You can get good deals, but if they are too good to be true, there are some dodgy licences floating out there (i.e. they were part of some batch for a company or school), which MS might conceivably turn off. Still, $20 is small enough to risk.

The licences are only for 1 seat, but you can transfer them through your MS account.

Yup. I usually buy from a reputable source when I see a deal. The $40 deal I posted several weeks ago was the lowest I've seen it for. Yesterday it dipped to $20. If I had known it would come down within another month or so, I would have held off for this.

I usually buy it whenever the 'new' version goes on sale & then pass the last version on to my wife, and then I don't think about it again until the new version is announced.

Correction- $31.49 with code "FUN" til tomorrow on Groupon which is a great deal (plus I got an extra 4% off with Rakuten)!

Good gracious- the upgrade process has turned into a Rube Goldberg colossal waste of time (going to a different site, uninstalling old, reinstalling new, ...). I'm going to continue using my 2021 and demand a refund.

For what it’s worth, I did not find it to be too bad. I did have to go to that site. Download some UnInstaller and then reinstall her and then register it, but it went pretty quickly and no issues. But yeah if that’s causing you hassle, I don’t blame you.

Yeah but be aware when you buy it only will install on Mac's running 14.0 or later. So don't buy if your running MacOS 12.7 like me!!!!

Oh interesting. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for pointing it out.
