Why would most people need any of the Microsoft Office applications as Pages, Numbers and Keynote provide more than enough capability for most and are free.

Compatability and functionality. I have to open/review the occasional spreadsheet/document, so there’s that. Then, I wasn’t able to find any mention of Pivot Tables (something I make extensive use of) in Numbers, so it was eliminated from consideration.

Because most people in the world use Microsoft Office and if we are into exchanging documents back and forth, that is what we will need to use. Even more so in enterprise and work environments.

I mean, the subscription service idea sucks. I actually bought the MS Words from the store on a disc. Assuming they don't have that option any more, I'm happy to use Google Docs. Why would someone who isn't an accountant or an admin assistant still need this??

What's interesting to me is that Office used to be available through a single app, and Microsoft broke it into individual apps a few years ago. You don't often see a company - especially one this size - make a change like that only to later change back. I wonder what they saw in their internal data to prompt this? It can't all be about app size, can it?

I wondered this too! I had the app back when it was all in one and was slightly upset when they ended support for it and I had to download 2 apps in place of my one. Interesting turnaround, and acting like it's the greatest new development and hadn't been the case in the past.

So Apple has to split iTunes into several apps because people complain it’s too complex, and Microsoft combines several apps into one to make it less complex?

It's not that iTunes was complex. It was bloated. Apple didn't need to add everything but the kitchen sink in that program, but they did.

I'm going to download now and try it out for myself. A unified Office app is nice because it will save a lot of storage space on my devices...

Only for iPhone. Unacceptable, considering it's fairly easy to make a Universal app nowadays.

Some drive north, others south...
They will release it for iPad eventually. For now just use the separate apps.

So I guess you can delete the individual apps if you have this Office app then?
So if both versions remain available, which one is better to use for doc creation? Which is better if you're read-only?
Thats the million-dollar question here. Are there any differences

Same. Just waiting for someone to tell me if I should delete the individual apps and use the new one or keep on with Word and Excel separately.

I find it strange to keep both around... I'd rather just embrace whichever direction Microsoft is heading with this.

So, I have a MS Office 365 Home subscription, which covers up to 5 computers. We currently have it installed on 4 computers. Anyway, I tried signing in to the new mobile app using my 365 account and the App rejected it. Do I need to buy a different subscription to make this mobile app work?

I am confused.

BTW - I purchased my Office subscription through the Apple App Store several years ago.

Noticed the icloud drive not available in cloud options? MS bites back!

Select Other Locations, Files App. It's because Apple doesn't offer a cloud drive public API. Same method available for access to third-party services like Box and Dropbox.

Where in the hell are the actual apps to be found in this office app? Iv’e hit every tab and icon and I don’t see Word, excel, etc. anywhere

Plus, document.

If you open an existing document, it obviously puts you into the right app.

Open a document.

Or create a new one (press the + sign, then click “documents”)

No worries, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are still individual apps. And they're free. And they're better than any garbage Microsuck has ever put out.

The one I really don't understand is Powerpoop. I mean, a word processor or spreadsheet isn't exactly new or interesting, and Apple has been better at it since AppleWorks back on the ][. But Keynote is (and has always been) so far ahead of Powerpoop that I just can't imagine why anybody would ever use anything else on a Mac.

Sure. https://www.apple.com/iwork/

some Mac users work in a predominantly Microsoft shop/office. Some Mac users ARE Microsoft employees and thus collaborate in ms office ... you know like the coders that’s made this app.

some interesting reviews from6yrs ago has me concerned so downloading and testing with work E4 license.

The licenses were liberalized a few years ago, you can do basic editing without any license, and I'm pretty sure now any paid Office license includes the mobile and tablet apps even if it doesn't include desktop. Competition from Google.

As a quick look using my works E4 license this isn’t bad. I’ve got an Apple iPhone 8 256GB with over 165GB free space, under 35 apps installed.

iOS Files app integration:
Location at top of screen vs other controls from Home is odd. Opening is a bit slow (3-5 seconds vs 1 opening natively or by share sheet use in other apps)

SharePoint file access is novel and useful. Lists as folder hierarchy then files in that order. Icon / list view by deafult. Cannot find a way to change this.

Home has a very clean layout here. Recent folders and documents mirror what you’ve opened on your work computer signed in with the same office account. Nice touch. Includes shared documents by you or to you.

If you have 2FA setup with your corporate account and already use MS Authenticator app the prompt is integrated into Office. you still see the pop up to ‘Approve’ yet you can select approve directly from the pop up no more redirection to the Authenticator app. I appreciate this.

Recent Apps listing is in:
Today, Yesterday or Other. The documents listed is according to last modified in a list view with File Name and beneath file path. The ellipses button will allow you to see full document properties. Within this list all document types are jumbled no way to sort by document type for faster recognition of the document being sought after if file name is not readily recalled by the end user.

I’m not sure if my employer has implemented File versioning so I cannot comment how this would affect documents in this app. Unsure of a shared document that’s edited by someone else in the company how quickly sync will show up on my end via this app.

min curious to see on iPadOS just how editing 2 separate documents at once will work with content sharing (drag n drop between the two and other apps in the OS. Moreover how will transfer.office.com will work with content sharing on EI WatchOS via the browser. Hmmm
