For anyone interested, I have a 365 account and already had office installed on my machine, but just to see if there were any differences I downloaded Word a few minutes ago. As far as I can tell, it is exactly the same in look and function as what you could download from their website. I have the 2019 versions of everything.

I don't know that there is any reason for existing users to go through the app store, but it will definitely be nice for people downloading office for the first time or on a new device.

Did you Uninstalled web version first? or just installed over the web version?

Are you just deleting the apps and then re-installing through the app store? I think I'll prefer to update through the app store versus the updater that came with Office when downloaded from MS.

I deleted the apps using TrashMe, which is a great app that helps with software uninstallation by locating and deleting all software remnants. I then deleted all the Microsoft-related files in Library/ LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons and PrivilegedHelperTools and also located and removed the Microsoft AutoUpdate app somewhere in Application Support (although it is not necessary I guess, because having removed all those launch agents, it will never launch).

But that’s me and I’m a bit OCD about this stuff.

Wish they would develop an Access application that would run on MacOS.

I am a Mac user and office365 subscriber. I deleted all the office apps which were previously downloaded from Microsoft and reinstalled via the Mac store.
Be warned! I had keychain issues because it was still remembering old password locations etc

Therefore advice: log out of all the office apps before uninstalling.

I'm very excited. I prefer to have as many apps as possible from the Mac App Store, update them at the very same place and not worry about license terms, etc. So I'll be swapping my regular install of Office 365 for the App Store apps.

I'm planning to do the same. How are you going to go about it?
Are you going to uninstall the current version and then install it from the App Store?
Or can you just install it from the App Store and it will overwrite the existing install?

In particular, I'm curious about what happens to the previous Microsoft auto-update tool, as presumably updates will be via the App Store instead.

Let me know how it goes, I'm happy to use you as my guinea pig! :)
[doublepost=1548360136][/doublepost]Just for fun, I just download OneNote from the App Store. (As I never use it, do don't mind if I screw it up).
I didn't uninstall the previous version, and it seems to have just overwritten it with the App Store version, and worked straight away. I can tell I'm now using the Mac Store version as the Help menu no longer has a "Check for updates" option.

So maybe this is a simpler process than described above.

Try reading what I wrote. I have a preputual license. I’d prefer to use Office from the App Store but it will be offered as a subscription only. I also never mentioned anything about Mac or Win versions having different features. (Which they do.)
You might want to try reading what you wrote too.
NOTHING in your post says you have a perpetual license already.
You’d prefer to use the App Store isn’t really a comprehensive answer is it?
Pointing out that the proper versions have a full feature set.

Calm down man.

So I didn’t say that I have Office 2016? My answer might not have been “comprehensive” but it’s benefits we’re already justified in this thread. Regardless, my preferring X over Y doesn’t need change any facts, and wasn’t relevant to my post.

I'm sure I read that Office 2019 will be the last version to offer a perpetual license, meaning Office 365 will be a must if you want Microsoft Office after 2019

I took your “fun” experience and downloaded Powerpoint.
"Check for updates" is gone.
Clicking on PowerPoint, About PowerPoint shows that I have still my Office 365 subscription active.
So it seems to be quite straightforward migrating to M.A.S.
Carlos
P.S.: Successfully updated Word and Excel "on top".

iWork FTW

For iWork to 'win', I'd have to have had a single person ever share an iWork document with me. The whole world has basically settled on Office, and I don't care what anyone tells me about how they're all compatible, I get messages about fonts and macros and such every time I try to open an Excel or Word file using iWork.

Is there any way to switch to the App Store Office apps with an existing subscription without trashing the current install and reinstalling everything like you seem to be describing?

Office's 365 $99 subscription allows 5 people to share your Office subscription for 5 installs and each outlook account getting 1TB of OneDrive space. Been doing this for a long time, highly recommend it.

Emphasis on the '5 installs' total. Unfortunately I use up all five for myself between my work machine, home machines, and iOS devices.

I sacked all the rubbish off my home Macs years ago... to be honest I was only keeping around for some of the fonts it brought but I thought I would have a clean slate.

I hate how I have to use this rubbish on my work Mac that does things the Windows way and doesn't implement the really neat features that modern Mac apps should such as versions or, now here's a big one for me, notification centre.

Notification centre is really well thought out, plug your Mac into an external display with screen mirroring and it assumes you are presenting.. did you know that it automatically turns on Do Not Disturb mode? You get that for free using the framework.. Outlook meanwhile will quite happily pop up if you forget to quit it.

Microsoft, way behind the curve when it comes to the best deskop OS out there.

I installed Word, Excel and PowerPoint “on top”. My Office 365 subscription (USD 5.99/month) is still valid, no need to uninstall everything.
YMMV.

Office 365 Home @ $99/year is 6 "users" total (different email logins) and unlimited installations on machines/devices, including iOS.

Wow yeah, you're right.

"Each person sharing this subscription can install Office on all their devices and be signed in to 5 at the same time." That's a total of 6 and can install on all machine/devices.

All this time thought only 5 installs and 5 total family shares.

I know that MS Word is more powerful than Pages in certain ways for more traditional document editing, but as far as education goes, Pages is by far and away the superior program and it's FREE when you own an overpriced Computer, tablet or phone! I kind of joke, but pages and Keynote are impressive programs and extremely flexible and easy to use. They aren't perfect, but they are still pretty neat.

I recommend anybody who uses MS word to try out Pages for a couple of months and see if you can get by with it instead of using MS Word. If you're a Powerpoint user, then run as fast as you can to Keynote. Unless you need destructible links, there is nothing PP can do that Keynote can't. KN wipes the floor with PP in terms of creativity.

Of course if you have to use it for work, there isn't much you can do...

Perhaps this is off topic (not that that has ever been a reason not to post on MacRumors before) but when I got my new Mac laptop in Dec/16, I decided to just go with Pages/Numbers/Keynote, and forgo Microsoft Office. I regularly give presentations at meetings, use spreadsheets, and make documents. I receive lots of excel and word documents, which convert easily, and on the odd occasion, need to convert and export a docx document from pages. I think I'm a pretty average user, and have never missed not having Microsoft Office installed. I think Apple should make a PC version of their productivity apps.
