A good step

One Note is a fine note taking app. This will help me unite the two ecosystems that I use (OSX and W8) - a win, win, situation for all!

This may be the wrong place to bring this up, and if it is I am sorry, but what is the draw of these note apps? What makes them particularly productive? Or more productive than say the Apple Notes App?

The big draws are: better and more flexible searching, notebooks for different kinds of notes, labeling notes for retrieval, different interfaces available to add to the notebook or access it. For example, you can add and index a note from Outlook directly into Evernote and search for something. You can also share a note with someone pretty easily.

This makes sense from Microsoft's point of view. They want to stay relevant, so will need to keep people in their ecosystem (i.e. using at least elements of their cash cow: Office). There's no point restricting themselves to Windows any more. Mac sales defy the general decline of PCs so makes sense to cover more bases. The rumoured update to Mac Office would confirm this.

Man, I used to use OneNote all the time for work. Nice application. After a while, I switched to my Mac. Shiny new products called iPhones and iPads were introduced. Then I discovered Evernote.

Talk about late to the party. Hope it syncs over iCloud.

As someone who has trouble with handwritting and taking notes in class I tried numerous note taking apps and methods. OneNote is hands down the best one on the Market. The first time I showed it to a teacher and told her the price, she said she would pay 10 times what it was going for. I really hope that they don't dumb down the Mac version and that it is just as full featured as the Windows client.

I have been looking for a good note taking app and hate Evernote so this could be a genuinely good alternative. Microsoft is slowly starting to take the right steps.

Thank you. I am no Microsoft fan but I'm surprised with the general negative attitude on this boards towards them. I don't know why some are so blinded with their loyality to Apple, that they wish ill for all its competitors (Microsoft, Google, Samsung, HTC, LG, etc...). Competition is good, just ask AT&T/Verizon/Sprint customers how much the benefited from T-Mobile droping their prices, and Microsoft staying relevant, taking the right steps, is a good thing even for Apple users.

Sounds like a good deal for folks who want it. Though, I'm not giving up Evernote; I love it too much.

I moved from OneNote to Evernote when I moved to the Mac. Certainly no intention of going back again. Evernote is so much better. It works great on the Mac, online and even works a treat on my iPhone.

Yes! Finally! I've been using the web interface as an interm solution for this and it's definitely been less than ideal. But I much prefer OneNote to Evernote. So this news makes me happy.

I use Evernote, and I can access my notes on almost any device anywhere in the world. Its search and organization feature are way beyond the Notes app. For example, I took a photo of an Infant Tylenol label to remember dosage and put the photo in a note. When I search, Evernote will do character recognition on the words in the photo and include them in the search results.

I also love how I can write a tutorial in Evernote and share a link with my staff so they can view the tutorial in a web browser.

After you take a photo on your phone, you can email it to a special email address for your Evernote account so that a new note is created containing the photo and any text you add to the email body.

I could go on and on. I'm sure OneNote has some of these features as well, but I haven't tried it yet. Google also has their competitor known as Keep.

I shudder to remember the days a long time ago when I kept notes scattered all over the place in text/Word documents, emails, etc.

Apple Notes is far better than OneNote. OneNote sync gets in a mess across different platforms and loses masses of data. For example: work on the desktop app, open the mobile app and you'll see a different version of the same note. OneNote is useless, horrible monstrosity of a mess - much like the company behind it.

Maybe OneNote has improved in the last six months, but I have NEVER had this problem with Apple Notes. I wouldn't even consider using OneNote if Microsoft were paying me to use it.

Circus Ponies

I like NoteBook from Circus Ponies software. Great organizing and note-taking app, and best of all, I don't have to share all my notes with the NSA! (unlike Evernote, although that application is good in its own way).

Dammit, I just spent $40 on Outline, the best OneNote clone on the Mac. It's good, but I bet OneNote Mac will be better.

Why would they do that? They have their own cloud service, one that works on more platforms.
