Microsoft has revealed its plans to bring a new design to its Outlook for Mac app along with several performance improvements (via The Verge).

Account syncing optimizations are promised as Outlook will adopt the same cloud sync technology that's used in Outlook for iOS and Android, which should mean Office 365, Outlook.com, and Google accounts sync faster.

Design-wise, users can expect a bundle of new features they may already be familiar with from using the web and mobile versions of Outlook. They include single line email views, a new mail compose interface, the ability to ignore emails, and collapsible panels in the main view.

Regular users will also notice that the ribbon has gone from Outlook for Mac. Microsoft explained its removal to The Verge in the following terms:

"Following the same design principles as the Office 365 user experience updates announced last year, the ribbon was updated in the new Outlook for Mac to be fully customizable. In Mac environment, we refer to it as a toolbar - at this time, there are no plans to announce updates to the ribbon elsewhere on Office for Mac."

Meanwhile, Microsoft is integrating Microsoft Search into the Outlook search bar, which will now live at the top of the Outlook window and hopefully provide quicker and more relevant results. There's also a new My Day view being added to the calendar in the main mail screen.

The new-look Outlook for Mac is available this week to beta testers in signed up to the Insider Fast builds. Simply toggle the "New Outlook" in the top right-hand corner of the app window. Microsoft says it has more updates in the works that should arrive over the coming months.

The current Outlook for Mac is ok, but a more streamlined UI is the correct approach. Faster synchronisation is also required so it's so s-l-o-w.

The Outlook iOS app is a bloated atrocity, so they need to completely start again with the app.

Please oh please update the app to include the Task pane. I miss seeing all my meetings, to-do’s, etc in one pane since I started using a Mac at work full time. 🤦🏼‍♂️

I find outlook for iOS the only app that is not bloated. The Mac version on the other hand is a mess with a confusing interface and so many missing features.

glad to see the departure of the ribbon. Let’s hope they remove it from all office apps.

As any GTD person would recommend, add your tasks into meetings notes. Keeping your tasks and mail together is a bad idea for your productivity.

I know this is the Verge thing, so I would say, let's go bigger, let's see a desk and part of the office around the screenshot, planted pot, water cooler. Who cares about actual screenshots, right?

Please, Jeebus, PLEASE have them make decent email filtering rules with Boolean logic AND/OR/NOR etc. like any decently powered filtering system has had for FORTY+ years...

Had enough with the headaches in syncing/filtering mail between Outlook 365 versions (use Win at work, have the Mac version at home) and finally made the switch back to Apple Mail (which, despite the protestations of many here and even my own misgivings........just works).

If MS/Apple could make it easy to import/export filtering rules across these two platforms, there would be no problem for me).

I use outlook for work and let me say- it is garbage. Searching for emails with words and phrases that are in the email doesn’t show those emails. It also unexpectedly quits all the time on me. I’ve upgraded each time it says there’s an upgrade available but nothing seems to change.

I mean, there’s no excuse for how bad the search function is. “Search” has been around almost since the beginning of the internet.

When will this update be available to the mainstream audience? And the new Office for iOS located in just one app? When will we see all this changes arrive to everyone? More or less. This year?

THANK GOODNESS.

Outlook for Mac isn’t even that old, but it has been utterly terrible since day one and is unacceptably broken. Poor performance, regular crashes, broken search, feature incomplete. It’s a disaster. The ribbon is the least of its problems!

Looks pretty good on Catalina. Wouldn't it be great if people could follow the installation instructions?

Just kidding......

I just upgraded with Insider Fast, and still see no "New Outlook" button any where. Can someone post a picture of what I should see? The version is 16.32, correct?

This new redesign looks a lot like a Windows style GUI to me. Thankfully Windows looks better than in the past, but… still definitely not my cup of tea.

The updated version IS the new version it seems.... unfortunately, still no support for iCloud calendars . Sigh.

Yeah, but will support Apple iCloud calendar (CalDAV) and contact (CardDAV) synchronization? If it doesn't, it's totally useless.
Doesn't work for me, but I'm hoping I'm just doing something wrong....

Outlook for Mac is really bad. I prefer the web version, or even the iOS version.

Outlook search is general is also terrible.

Most would disgaree. Their iOS apps are the most highly regarded programs that MS makes.

And I see zero issues with iOS Outlook, its speed, or anything near "bloated" I ahve seen gripes about the app generally (bugs, missing features, etc) but never that it's slow/bloated.

Still better than Apple Mail

Agree fully. At least it works unlike Apple Mail in iOS13

Has anyone on Insider Fast ring actually gotten this release yet? If so, what's the version number? I am currently on 16.32 that was installed this morning, but I don't see any option to turn this new view on.

Thanks

I just hope the "cloud syncing" can be disabled for email accounts not hosted by Microsoft (such as corporate Exchange and non-Microsoft IMAP accounts), because routing all mails through Microsoft is a massive privacy and security issue and usually not allowed by corporate IT policy.

Well they said this week, but they doesn’t mean today. Could be Thursday when they enable it.

I agree completely regarding support for common internet standards like CalDAV/CardDAV, but doesn't it already support local access to Apple Contacts and Apple Calendar? Not that anyone should keep anything they care about in either one, of course... but I thought it supported the proprietary interfaces.

This is driving me out of my mind, I can’t do basic stuff. I recently started using O365 on Mac and have never really used Mac’s Mail. Does it work well for rules/filtering? (I’m willing to try almost anything at this point... Though it’s a bummer that Outlook is so bad at this because MS has come so far...)
