Microsoft today announced that it will "soon" be combining its Xbox and Xbox Game Pass apps on the iPhone and iPad, as well as on Android.

Features from the Xbox Game Pass app will be moving to the Xbox app for an all-in-one experience. In the Xbox app, you will be able to view your Game Pass membership, browse the catalog of games, view and claim perks, and more.

As part of this transition, Microsoft said the Xbox Game Pass app for the iPhone and iPad will be removed from the App Store starting in November.

Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service that provides gamers with a rotating selection of games to play on an Xbox console or Windows PC. With the Xbox Game Pass app, you can search, view, and download games available in the Game Pass catalog, but the titles cannot be played on the iPhone and iPad directly.

Is it not possible to play Xbox Game Pass games through browser on iPhone?
It is the only way you're able to, until this app comes out.

Cautiously optimistic on this. Was able to play a couple games through the browser - quality was hit or miss

Correction - this will not provide cloud gaming. Moving along, I guess

Dumb question: Would 'streamable' game stream directly to the browser via this app, or would they need to be running on a nearby xbox device?

This is really only going the be useful for a majority of users, once Apple is forced to open up iOS/iPadOS for actual Xbox/Xcloud game-streaming or maybe down the road native games.
Right!? Being forced to use my home Xbox to stream to my iPhone instead of just doing the same from the cloud when I'm already paying for a Game Pass sub is just absurd.

Please just bring cloud gaming to iOS/tvOS please. It's such a massive market hole that Apple refuses to fill because of their greedy 30% cut and propping up the failing apple arcade

Imagine hooking your xbox controller up to an apple TV and playing xbox games through an xbox tvOS app....

It would eat so many lunches and become a literal new era of gaming. Nobody cares that this is already on whatever obscure android tv box- this has to be on tvOS and iOS to matter.

It’s already allowed. Microsoft isn’t going to release an app for it because “no room for monetization”… which is actually a fair point they’re making. Doing so would seem to open up others to double-dipping on that store cut of 30%. One to Microsoft, another to Apple. They’d have a hard time getting anyone to offer their games up to the service if that was part of the deal.

Keyword Browser with all it's limitations.
Microsoft would like to do so in the App, but says Apple's 30% cut doesn't make it viable.

If the 30% Apple cut falls/lowers, it most likely would do so within a very short amount of time.

I think that Apple did start allowing it and MS said they still didn't want to release it for some reason.

Microsoft charges the same "greedy" 30% cut as well. How exactly would being able to play games through an Apple TV become a new era of gaming but an Xbox Series S didn't create a new era of gaming with a low pricepoint? It's worthwhile to have the functionality but if this were to create a new era of gaming it would just be baked into a smart TV...and nobody's stopping that from happening, but it isn't.

Apple has tools for porting native games to the hardware. It has been out for a lot longer than them blocking other gaming streaming services.

Microsoft takes the same 30% cut in their app stores and on Xbox. So, are you upset that Best Buy takes a 30% cut for their retail stores? Valve does the same thing on their PC storefront Steam, does that make you mad too? Sony and Nintendo have the same cut on their console stores… Your last point was more valid about Apple Arcade.

You can sync your Xbox controller to an Apple TV, you’re not playing Xbox games though. Same with PlayStation and Switch Pro controllers (Joycons too) for playing games on tvOS.

Apple TV is Apple’s trojan horse for gaming. Too bad the iPod Touch is dead for handheld, non-phone gaming. Allowing game streaming services, plus emulation of obsolete consoles up to PS2, GameCube and OG Xbox, then it would “feed a lot of lunches.” I hope Metal will continue to push the buy it on App Store, then get all versions across Apple’s ecosystems; such as the new Resident games and Death Stranding are great examples.

Streaming really sucks still. It’s just not a good experience unless it’s a slow paced game that doesn’t require quick reflexes.

The Microsoft online store is a disaster. I tried to find a link to gift Flight Simulator to my grandson and ended up going to GameStop to get it done.
As someone who’s probably a good deal younger than you, I concur.
