After struggling with CoRD and the Microsoft RDP app for years I stumbled upon RoyalTSX. I can't sing this app's praises enough. It's saved collections, settings, and FreeRDP implementation work really well. It also doesn't crash all the time like CoRd did.

I'm honestly surprised more people don't know about it.

That kind of sounds like a shill, but it is really great.
I use the windows version of RoyalTS at work to admin the servers but trying to do less out of hours work at home so haven't tried the Mac version ;)

The windows version does have a lot of nice features though, so if I did need a client for OS X it would probably be my first stop.

About time!!! I had to buy and install windows on bootcamp just to use remote desktop for work. Nov 1st is my last day at my "real" job so I wont have to worry about remoting anymore but this is still cool to see.

I've been using third-party RDP utilities for some time - it will be nice to see what an official one adds.

I hope RDPing to a Windows 8 machine from an iPad provides a seamless touch experience - even when the host Windows machine doesn't have a touch screen.

No, this is badly needed ....

Agree that this is primarily for corporate use, but our company relies heavily on RDC. (We're almost all Mac in some of our offices and mostly Windows 7 in others -- with most of the servers running Windows 2003 or 2008 Server on the back end.)

The Apple Remote Desktop Client MS released as v2.11 and hasn't updated officially for years is very broken in some respects. Most importantly, it has problems properly getting a license "seat" from a Windows 2008 (or newer) server when a user starts a session with it. It fails to connect with a license error message, unless you're connecting to an '08 server where the terminal server licensing isn't properly configured yet (trial mode, for example).

There's actually a v2.12 hotfixed release of the RDC client to address this, but for reasons I can't fathom -- that one was never made an official updated release. You can't even download it except by Microsoft support giving you the link when you file a trouble ticket with them over the problem.

There ARE alternatives out there for the Mac, but unfortunately, most I've used lack in some important area. For example, CoRD is great *except* it can't do printer or drive redirection like the official Microsoft client does.

Except for the corporate world, I do not see this being used a lot. And even in the corporate world, it is usually only in the small to medium size companies where there is a chance that you have an Admin working on a Mac that would need Remote desktop solution for Microsoft.

And in that case, as the article points out there are a lot of alternatives out there (I have toyed with a few) and most are way better than what Microsoft has ever put out.

jk ...this is great news

Glad Microsoft finally "woke up", it was about time!

Now I just hope that they will make the core libraries available to developers so that we can get native RDP support in apps like Royal TSX...

If they manage to implement real remote touchscreen controls (rather than emulating a mouse), that could be very interesting if the remote machine runs the Win8 Metro interface. I use Jump Desktop on the iPad quite frequently to access PCs, but as someone already wrote, it's less than ideal for controlling a traditional desktop interface with mouse emulation.

Huh? Microsoft has been shipping a FREE Remote Desktop Client for OS X for YEARS:

MS is certainly giving in to Apple tech lately.

No. MS is changing the entire company lately; they're transforming into a services-oriented business and simply open themselves to other platforms now. They're doing as much on Android and even Linux as they're doing on Apple platforms.

I am soooo happy. No joke!! Hopefully it will be easy to use and support multiple connections at the same time.

I was so excited when I saw the RDP client in 2011. Yeah I am a dork.
But as touched on here it doesn't work in most environments that you would need that type of connectivity. It's really only good for talking to render nodes in a render farm. For that it kicks butt when you have a Mac workstation and a bunch of cheap windows 1ru servers for a farm.
Maybe this new client will be more useful? But more than likely it will just be the typical M$ crap where they put a bunch of useless "social" features in it and change the color scheme to orange and grey. While removing useful features like ability to change bit depth, save a connection as a shortcut or actually cut/paste/send files.

Meh, Chrome Remote Desktop works great, and it's free. It's not iOS-compatible, but I doubt this Microsoftware will be free.

The existing RDP client for Mac is free from Microsoft.

Their remote desktop stopped working for me after I upgraded to lion. It could just be my companies setup (authentication and whatnot) but either way it will still be cool to see on ios even though there are some other apps that already do so.

It still work for me (Mountain Lion in my Mac Mini 2011 and MBA 2013) though it 'officially' stated that it doesn't work with Lion or later.

Defitely an official version would be nice from Microsoft.

I think the existing remote client is 'usable' but not that good when you need to RDP to multiple clients in the same time with full screen. I'm really looking for some enhancement for new RDP client in that area.
