Microsoft today released a series of updates for users of its Office for Mac productivity suites, bringing security, performance, and stability improvements to Office 2011, 2008, and 2004, as well as a pair of ancillary updates.

- Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 14.1.3 Update (112.0 MB): Improvements include security fixes and a number of improvements for PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook, including improved browser compatibility for all document types.

- Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.3.1 Update (333.0 MB): Improvements include security fixes as well as a fix for displaying Word Help in various languages and updated time zone support for Outlook.

- Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.6.5 Update (9.0 MB): According to an associated support document, the update appears to contain only security fixes.

Additional details on the security fixes, which address as many as five vulnerabilities in Excel depending on Office version, are available in a Microsoft security bulletin.

- Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.2.1 (45.0 MB) and Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac, Web Services Edition (64.0 MB) have also been updated to provide security fixes and compatibility with the updated versions of Office for Mac.

Am I the only one having trouble installing the 14.1.3 update? This is using Microsoft's automatic updater...

I'm trying right now, I had that problem trying to install the service pack right after I got my MBA with Lion. It seems to be a Lion problem, I will post back.

Edit: Same problem as you, won't install.. Another Microsoft fail!

Running SL on this machine but it worked for me. Realize that doesn't help you much though

actually, this could be helpful...

I had Excel open at the time and used Help | Check for Updates.

I wish I was feed Apple Mail as a child...

RTH231 I had the same problem with my new MBA last night but think it was for Office 2011 14.1.2 Update software version. I investigated further and a Microsoft solution web page stated that this version is not suited to my system. Then I remember this is a MS product not Apple. I have also had issues with the Outlook main identity and have several times had to recreate it losing some e-mails.

MBA with Lion 7.1 here. Just installed the update... no problems at all. I'll be installing it on my mini (Lion again) when I get home.

See, this is Mocrosft's problem... Why on earth are they still pushing updates for a 2004 product? Apple isn't still updating 10.3, are they? Perhaps MS could innovate more if they refocused some of their talent...

This problem usually happens when you've used an 'App Cleaner' type app, that has removed things that weren't supposedly in use.

I had this issues previously and can't remember whether it required a reinstall of Office, or a reload of the OS.

Updated an iMac running Lion 10.7.2 and a 2011 MBP running 10.7.1 without any issues.

updated my macbookpro 11 running 10.7.1 with no issues:)

for about 2 sec at the select hard drive window for installation, it didn't recognise the main hard disk, after 2 sec it became highlighted and then i cud install , just had to quit any microsoft apps running and browsers too including safari:apple:

Oh... and Apple doesn't care about iOS 3.x anymore (which was sold until only 1.5 years ago!). And they don't care about Leopard either (only about 3 years ago). And they don't care about compatibility to Final Cut Pro (last version only 2009!).

See, that's the difference between a professional company such as Microsoft who invests a lot into BUSINESS customers and an iToy phone company like Apple (has become *sigh*).

Patch installed without problems

Installed without a problem on OS X Lion 10.7.1 with Office 2011 version 14.1.2 (new patch nb. 14.1.3 (110805) and both in Dutch)

I did close all office applications (incl the updater and calender notifications) before installing the actual patch.

Why can't Microsoft ever release a product that isn't full of security holes?

This is exactly why I jumped ship from Windows to OSX.

Yeah Apple have updates, but nowhere as frequent or serious as Microsofts poor poor software security problems. it doesn't seem like a day goes by that Microsoft aren't peddling a security flaw fix or three.

To those with the failing update:

Did you move the office suite away from it's default position? Did you put it in another folder?

Seems to be an authorization problem as console shows :

Code:
14/09/11 12:44:13,403 authorizationhost: SFBuiltinEntitled: Installer.app is not entitled for system.install.apple-software
14/09/11 12:44:13,429 authorizationhost: SFBuiltinEntitled: Installer.app is not entitled for system.install.app-store-software
14/09/11 12:44:13,454 authorizationhost: SFBuiltinEntitled: Installer.app is not entitled for system.install.app-store-software
14/09/11 12:44:13,455 com.apple.SecurityServer: Failed to authorize right 'system.install.app-store-software' by client '/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PackageKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/installd' [3158] for authorization created by '/System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app' [2946]

That's A Good Point

Also, when I installed the updates, I was prompted to close Safari, and Thunderbird.....in fact everything that was running. Check what's running in the background for those with issues.....MS don't ya just love em? I only bought Office cause I HAD to have it.....the only really useful part of it for me would be Outlook, but no way am I paying £ 129.00 for the upgrade.

You obviously fail to see that maybe Apple doesn't update those programs because there isn't a need for any updates in those OS's. As for Final Cut, you also need to look at the fact it was rewritten from scratch and backwards compatibility can't always be guaranteed in such a case. Although I don't agree with the Final Cut ordeal I have a feeling years from now people will be loving it and be glad Apple went the way they did with it.

Also the "iToys" thing is innacurate. The last several IT jobs I applied to with big name companies all wanted mac certifications. They can't be that much of a toy.

This is the second security fix IIRC for MS Office 2011 since it was released in the fall of last year. Lion has already had two and it was released two months ago. Stuff happens, you should be glad MS is still updating software that is as old as Office 2004.

I had this problem on another Mac when I ran the last update. I ended up having to download the patch file to my desktop and then install it. Also, make sure you are logged in as the admin user, even when allowing my secondary account access and entering the admin password it still would not install unless I was logged in as the admin user. Don't know why. However this patch installed no problem under Lion.

I was asked to close Safari too but I had no issues
