Am I the only one having trouble installing the 14.1.3 update? This is using Microsoft's automatic updater...

Try installing the 14.1.0 update first. This is what I did and it worked (I had the same issue before).

See, this is Mocrosft's problem... Why on earth are they still pushing updates for a 2004 product? Apple isn't still updating 10.3, are they? Perhaps MS could innovate more if they refocused some of their talent...

Microsoft is a little famous for supporting their software for a long time. It's what keeps them popular in the Enterprise. Keep in mind that Windows XP, released in 2001 is still being supported for a few more years.

We have many users actually that still use Office 2004. We are only upgrading them because of compatibility with Exchange 2010. (We only have to upgrade to Office 2008 to regain compatibility, but we are going to 2010.)

RTH231 I had the same problem with my new MBA last night but think it was for Office 2011 14.1.2 Update software version. I investigated further and a Microsoft solution web page stated that this version is not suited to my system. Then I remember this is a MS product not Apple. I have also had issues with the Outlook main identity and have several times had to recreate it losing some e-mails.
I've had Communicator hard hang my MBA several times. After a reboot my system-wide preferences are corrupted and gone to the point where I have to reconfigure everything.

I've never had another program do that (multiple times, even) in my years of using Mac OS.

Surprised there's no Versions & Autosave support. Probably looking for ways to sell it for addition profit. Paid Service Pack here we come.

I'm sure there would be people complaining if Microsoft prematurely dropped support for Office 2004 as well.

And the reason Office 2004 is still supported is that until Office 2011 was released, Office 2004 was the only way Mac users could use VBA which is a non-trivial feature for those that want to use a Mac in the corporate world. Now that Office 2011 is released, Microsoft is still providing support to Office 2004 as a grace period for people to transition. That isn't a problem, it's a courtesy and a convenience.

Also, when I installed the updates, I was prompted to close Safari, and Thunderbird.....in fact everything that was running. Check what's running in the background for those with issues.....MS don't ya just love em?

I really do not know what you want!? Xcode, Apples own software, requires that you quit iTunes and iTunes Helper or the installation fails. The installation fails also on Lion server, AFAIK.

And regarding the update process: You cannot overwrite open files (executable files, plist files, all files) from a third party application without damaging the HFS+ file system or the files. Do you really want a damaged file system or damaged files? I do not want it, i lost enough data in the past years, even with backups.

That's what I did too after reinstalling Office 2011 :
14.1.0 : OK
14.1.2 : OK
14.1.3 : NOK

PS : I've rebooted after each step

Nice to see at least MS still supports older Office versions (i.e. 2004 & 2008). Apple hasn't even did a major upgrade of iWork since 2010, right? Much less update 2009, 2008, or earlier.

Oh... and Apple doesn't care about iOS 3.x anymore (which was sold until only 1.5 years ago!). And they don't care about Leopard either (only about 3 years ago). And they don't care about compatibility to Final Cut Pro (last version only 2009!).

Say what you will about them, but I actually have to complement them on getting long value out of software. I'm still on 2004 and I eventually will have to upgrade (especially if upgrading to Lion, but no compelling reason to upgrade to Lion right now), but I've certainly got my money's worth out of Office 2004.

See, that's the difference between a professional company such as Microsoft who invests a lot into BUSINESS customers and an iToy phone company like Apple (has become *sigh*).

The translation of "toy" in geek language is... "I'm out of touch with what the rest of the world wants in a product versus my tiny niche...and it frustrates me."

This is an improvement?

"Import from Apple Mail is disabled in Outlook on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
This update disables the option to import from Apple Mail in Outlook because it does not work as expected in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion."

:D

I will be always commending Microsoft for support the PPC Macs for so long. :)

Thanks a lot. This worked for me (OS X 10.7.1), I had the same problem. At least I seized the opportunity to register on MacRumors (after reading the comments for years :)).

I actually commend Microsoft specifically because they stand behind their software for the long haul.

You obviously fail to see that maybe Apple doesn't update those programs because there isn't a need for any updates in those OS's.

What makes you think they're immune to any as-yet undiscovered vulnerabilities which would need updating? At least one high-profile security vulnerability (the one that recently triggered security update 2011-005) almost certainly affects OS X 10.5 (circa 2007 software). Same goes for 10.4 (circa 2005), 10.3 (circa 2003), etc... And yet they haven't (and likely never will) received an update.

Windows XP (circa 2001) did receive an update for the very same security vulnerability.

I never said they were immune, I simply stated that Apple obviously hasn't found anything that needed updating.

Uninstalled office, re-installed office and manual downloaded 14.1. Then 14.1.3 appeared through auto updater and it worked.

This whole "Apple are immune to security bugs" argument reminds me of the Windows NT vs Unix argument fifteen years ago. There were a lot of people arguing NT was more secure because it had far fewer exploits than Unix - we all know how that went. Today OS X is a small market just as NT was then but if the volume grows it will be worth exploiting and the picture will change very quickly.

Just updated MS Office. Had no problems at all. Weird how some of you guys are having problems....

Actually this is what I did.. maybe that's why I didn't have any issues?
